WALTHAM, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University softball team got the offense going Sunday on its way to a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader sweep of Lasell College. The Wildcats took the opener, 8-0, in six innings then completed the sweep with the 8-3 win in game two.
With the sweep, JWU improves to 11-11 overall and 3-1 in the GNAC, while Lasell drops to 3-17 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
The Lasers are back in action on Tuesday, April 9, with a non-conference twin bill at Gordon College, beginning at 3 p.m. JWU is off until Saturday when it travels to Simmons for a 12 p.m. GNAC doubleheader.
Game 1: Johnson & Wales 8, Lasell 0 (6 innings)
It was a constant barrage of offense in game one as the Wildcats scored in all five of their last at-bats.
JWU worked the long ball as all six of its last runs came via home run. Summer Ramundo hit a two-run bomb in the third then Ally Mishol followed with one in third and another in the sixth. Devin Scales hit her first collegiate home run in the fifth.
Pitcher Kristin Frost picked up her second shutout in as many days. She tossed five scoreless innings, giving up six hits with three strikeouts.
Lasell got seven hits from seven different players but could not push a run across. Juniors Victoria Spellman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Sarah Kline (Vernon, Conn.) each hit a double in the setback.
Game 2: Johnson & Wales 8, Lasell 3
Johnson & Wales did most of its damage in a four-run second inning. The big blow was a bases-clearing triple from Megan Gavin. She had a pair of hits in both games.
Lasell got two runs back when sophomore Sarah Walton (Poland, Maine) hit a two-run home run in the fourth. An inning later, Brenna DuPerry answered with a two-run triple.
Ramundo worked five innings to get the victory. She surrendered two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Zoe Jennings got the final six outs.
Freshman Lisa Pare (Ellington, Conn.) went 3-for-3 to lead the Lasers, and classmate Brianna Gendreau (Warren, R.I.) had a pair of singles.
