NEWTON, Mass. – New England College scored 25 runs on 29 hits to sweep a non-conference softball doubleheader from Lasell College Tuesday afternoon at Taylor Field, 12-2 and 13-2, both games ending after five innings.
The Pilgrims have now won 12 games in a row to improve to 14-4 overall, while Lasell drops to 3-11.
The Lasers will be home again on Thursday, April 4, for a non-conference twin bill against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), beginning at 3 p.m. The Pilgrims will look to keep their streak going Saturday, April 6, with a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) doubleheader at Eastern Nazarene College, starting at 6 p.m.
Game 1 – New England College 12, Lasell 2 (5 innings)
After scoring one run in the first inning, the Pilgrims put up six runs in the second inning to take command, and tacked on four runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to put the game away.
Lasell scored its two runs in the third inning, as junior Sarah Kline (Vernon, Conn.) and junior Essie Plouffe (North Scituate, R.I.) led off with back to back doubles, and junior Victoria Spellman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) added a two-out RBI double.
Sophomore Destiny Helmedach (Middlefield, Conn.) and freshman Daelyn Ross (Freeport, N.Y.) led the Pilgrims with three hits and two RBI each. Ross had a pair of doubles and a triple, and Helmedach and freshman Izzabella Phelps (Rochester, Wash.) each hit home runs. Freshman Emily Nelson (Londonderry, N.H.) also had a double and a single and drove in a run.
Sophomore Taylor Barbour (Bay Shore, N.Y.) earned the win for NEC, pitching a complete game and allowing just two runs on five hits, striking out nine to improve her record to 9-2. Sophomore Nicolette Genkos (Worcester, Mass.) started for Lasell and took the loss (0-2).
Game 1 – New England College 13, Lasell 2 (5 innings)
The Lasers jumped on top with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Sarah Walton (Poland, Maine) led off with a single to left and went to second on a sac bunt. After Kline reached on a fielder's choice, freshman Kelsey Scannevin (Harpswell, Maine) drove in Walton with a single to right, and Kline came home on a Pilgrim throwing error.
NEC came right back with seven runs on seven hits in the top of the third inning, including three triples in a row. Freshman Jasmin Alvarado (San Diego, Calif.) delivered a three-run triple before scoring on a wild pitch, and sophomore Rachel Senechal (Killingworth, Conn.) and Helmdach followed with back-to-back triples. Sophomore Yesenia Dominguez (Symlar, Calif.) added an RBI single and senior Taylor Dill (Bellingham, Mass.) wrapped up the rally with an RBI infield grounder.
The Pilgrims put three more runs up in each of the next two innings. Helmedach and Dominguez had RBI singles in the fourth inning, and Senechal added a two-run single to highlight the fifth-inning rally.
Sophomore Emily Farone (Sandown, N.H.) posted the win (4-1) for NEC, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits in five innings. Sophomore Hailey Haskins (Franklin, N.H.) started for Lasell and took the loss (2-5).
