CLERMONT, Fla. – The Lasell College softball team recorded its first victory of the season Wednesday afternoon on its Spring Break trip to the National Training Center, defeating Fredonia State University 4-2 after falling to Gordon College in the first game of the day, 5-2.
Sophomore Hailey Haskins (Franklin, N.H.) earned the complete-game victory over Fredonia while collecting two RBIs for the Lasers. The verdict helped Lasell improve to 1-5 on the trip, while Fredonia is now 3-7 and Gordon is 4-4.
Lasell will continue its 10-game Florida trip with two more contests on Thursday, March 14, meeting the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at 4 p.m. and Becker College at 6:15 p.m.
Game 1 – Gordon 5, Lasell 2
After Gordon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Lasell pulled ahead with two runs in the second inning as freshman Torie Anglin (Canton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and junior Victoria Spellman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) followed with a bases-loaded walk. That turned out to be the extent of the Laser offense, which finished the game with just three hits.
The Scots pulled ahead with three runs in the third inning and tacked on an insurance run in the fourth.
Sophomore Hannah Doherty (Hampton, N.H.) had two of Lasell's three hits, while sophomore Sarah Walton (Poland, Maine) reached base three times with a single and two walks.
Sophomores Allie Borowsky (Dalton, Mass.) and Nicolette Genkos (Worcester, Mass.) each pitched three innings for Lasell, with Borowsky taking the loss (0-1). Genkos allowed just two hits and one unearned run, striking out two.
Game 2 – Lasell 4, Fredonia 2
Haskins allowed two runs on five hits and no walks in seven innings for her first victory (1-2), striking out one. She hit a two-run single to right field in the second inning to put the Lasers ahead 2-1. Lasell added two unearned runs in the third inning following a pair of Gordon infield errors, pushing the lead to 4-1.
The Scots scored one more run in the fifth inning, but Haskins shut them down the rest of the way.
Spellman went 2-for-3 for the Lasers, hitting safely for the fifth time in six games with her fourth multi-hit game. The junior first baseman has a team-leading 10 hits, three doubles, two triples, five RBI and a .476 batting average.
