Suffolk Goes Yard to Sweep Softball

BOSTON, Mass. (4/23/17) – Suffolk used eight home runs in the first game and a shutout in the nightcap to sweep the Lasell softball team on Sunday afternoon at East Boston Memorial Park. The decisions keep Lasell winless in the conference at 0-14 and drops them to 4-24 overall, while the Rams improve to 9-6 in the GNAC and 17-14 this season.

Game One – Suffolk: 17 Lasell: 6

The Lasers combined for seven hits in the conference opener, led by Arianna Genovese (Rocky Hill, Conn.), who went 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI and a run scored. Erin Smith (Gorham, Maine), Nicole Arcese (Holliston, Mass.), and Ashley Gatchell (Franklin, Mass.) accounted for the remaining runs batted in, all in the fifth inning.

After Lasell put up one run to open the contest via a Genovese single to left, Ashley Zulla beamed the Ram's first homer with a blast over the center field fence. The freshman brought in lead-off hitter Sydney Littlefield, who found the gap behind second record a single and snipped second during her fellow outfielders at bat. Two batters later, Jill Pulek's single to left field scored Jaclyn Flint, who reached on a Laser's error, and the designated hitter ran home on a jack from Delaney Sylvester that stretched Suffolk's edge to 5-1.

The Lasers made a change in the circle with Lydia Lewis-Hicks (Seekonk, Mass.) taking over for Krystel Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) and the fresh arm retired fanned the next three Rams to keep a four-run game after one frame. 

At the end of four, Suffolk used 10 hits and four homers to complete a nine-run inning, as Hannah DelCervo took over the circle and the Lasers took advantage of thee fresh arm, scoring five runs in the final frame for the final 17-6 tally. 

Taylor Holmes picked up the win inside the circle. The junior tossed 4.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Enko suffered the setback, letting up five runs (four earned) in less than a full inning.

Game Two – Suffolk: 5 Lasell: 0

In the nightcap, Genovese swung into Lasell's only two hits of the evening. Arcese pitched the complete game, allowing five runs (three earned) with three K's.

A quiet first inning was followed by two runs in the second and third, respectively, by the Rams to put the hosts in front 4-0. With two down in the second, Lindsay Pagano drew a walk to keep the inning alive, before an error by the Lasers advanced the runner to third and Karina Marina brought the two home with a single up the middle.

An inning later, Delaney Sylvester marked her second straight game with a jack as the junior catcher went yard and scored Jill Pulek, who doubled down the left line in the process, to push Suffolk's lead to 4-0.

Suffolk stretched things even further in the bottom of the sixth, as Evelyn Marquis led off with a single up and the middle and advanced to second a sac bunt from Pagano. Morgan Parmeter's single to short placed Marquis in prime scoring position on third. As Parmeter went to snag second, the runner had the Lasers attention allowing Marquis to come in to make it a 5-0 Rams game.

Jaclyn Flint picked up the win in the circle with a complete-game, two-hit, four-strikeout shutout effort.

The Lasers return to Taylor Field for the first time since April 13 on Tuesday, April 25 for a GNAC doubleheader against Mount Ida starting at 3:30 p.m.
