Lasell Downs Gallaudet to Split Fourth Day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. (3/16/17) -- The Lasell College softball team split its fourth day of Florida games Thursday, earning a 12-3 win over Gallaudet after an 8-0 setback to Roger Williams at Hancock Park.

Lasell improves to 2-6 with its largest offensive output of the season, a 17-hit attack, while the Bison slip to 5-10-1 and the Hawks advance to 5-5. 

Five different Lasers recorded multiple-hit efforts against Gallaudet. Senior second baseman Erin Smith (Gorham, Maine) went 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, an RBI and four stolen bases.

Freshman Nichole Arcese (Holliston, Mass.) struck out four and allowed just two earned runs in a complete-game victory, while going 2-for-4 with three RBI at the plate.

The Lasers built a commanding lead through just two innings, scoring four runs in the first and five more in the second. Smith led off the game with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored as freshman catcher Arianna Genovese (Rocky Hill, Conn.) singled for the first of three, two-out hits.

After junior designated player Laura MacLeod (Old Saybrook, Conn.) doubled Genovese home, advanced to third, and freshman third baseman Sarah Kline (Vernon, Conn.) walked, Archese's single scored them both.

Lasell got right to work in the second, scoring five runs on five hits and an error before an out was recorded. Sophomore center fielder Maggie King (Sandy Creek, N.Y.) drove home the inning's first run after the first two batters of the inning reached, including Smith, who singled and stole second and home. Genovese and Kline also recorded RBI, while MacLeod reached on an error that brought in an unearned run.

The Lasers finished the scoring with a three-run, five-hit seventh as Gallaudet was only able to muster single runs in the second, third and seventh innings. Archese and freshman shortstop Bailey Burnett (Phillipston, Mass.) singled home runs, while Smith hit a double, again all before an out was recorded.o

The Lasers conclude their week-long stay in Florida with a pair of games at Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex on Friday night, March 17, facing Sewanee at 6:00 p.m. and MCLA at 8:30 p.m.
