Softball Falls to Fitchburg State, Lancaster Bible on Opening Day

CLERMONT, Fla. (3/13/17) -- The Lasell College softball team opened its 2017 season on Monday, falling to Fitchburg State and Lancaster Bible in doubleheader action at Sleepy Hollow Park.

The Lasers fell to 0-2 on the season with the 6-4 and 7-2 losses, while the Falcons move to 1-2 and the Chargers advance to 3-5. 

Seven different Lasers recorded hits in their first contest of the season against a New England foe, but the Falcons struck for two runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings to earn the victory. Junior designated hitter Laura MacLeod (Old Saybrook, Conn.) was responsible for half of the Lasell offense, lacing a two-RBI single to right field in the third.

Senior Krystel Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) allowed just two earned runs on five hits while striking out two over four innings on the mound, while sophomore Mazie Baldarelli (Fitchburg, Mass.) finished the game in relief.

Senior shortstop Erin Smith (Gorham, Maine) paced the Lasers against Lancaster Bible, going 3-for-4 with a run scored from the leadoff spot. Freshman Victoria Spellman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) went 1-for-3 and drove in Lasell's only two runs of the game with a fifth-inning single. 

In her first start of the season, junior Lydia Lewis-Hicks (Seekonk, Mass.) struck out four Charger batters in 5.1 innings of work. 

Lasell continues its stay in Florida with another doubleheader on Tuesday, March 14, facing Becker and Minnesota-Morris at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
