Blue Jays Blank Softball in GNAC Twinbill

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. –  Lasell College fell to The University of Saint Joseph softball team in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) softball action on Saturday afternoon. The Lasers dip to 2-8 in the GNAC and 5-15 overall, while the Blue Jays ride a 15-game win streak to stay perfect in the conference at 10-4 and improve to 20-4 this season. The Blue Jays won 8-0 in five innings in game one and blanked the Lasers in the nightcap 6-0.

USJ senior Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) added three more career records to her growing list: most doubles and most RBI with the bat and most shutouts pitching. Her two doubles on the day gave her 44 and her five RBI put her at 115, surpassing Ashley Gall who had 43 doubles and 112 RBI from 2011-14. She also pitched her ninth career shutout to pass the eight of Sarah Dudley from 2008-2010.

Sciglimpaglia went 4-for-5 in the two games and also homered. She pitched a one-hitter in the opener to go to 12-0 on the mound with 12 complete-game wins.

USJ scored two runs in the first inning of the first game and six times in the second. Morgan Skoly (Vernon, Conn.) and Sarah Ercoli (Plainville, Conn.) walked to start the first and both scored. Ashley Tucker (Middletown, Conn.) homered to lead off the second and Patti Sciglimpaglia capped the scoring in the inning with a three-run homer, her team-leading fourth of the season.

The game was shorted to five innings due to the NCAA mercy rule and Sciglimpaglia took a perfect game into the fifth. Tessa Beane (Swampscott, Mass.) singled to left center with one out and was the only Lasell batter to reach. Sciglimpaglia struck out seven.

Danielle Circosta (Feeding Hills, Mass.) pitched a four-hitter to improve to 8-2 on the season and earn the shutout in the late game.

Mary Sciglimpaglia had a two-run single in the first inning for USJ and an RBI double in the third to help USJ to a 3-0 lead. Patti Sciglimpaglia had an RBI-double in the fourth and Isabellla Russo (Southington, Conn.) had a two-run single in the fifth to complete the scoring. Both Sciglimpaglia twins, Skoly, Tucker and Kara Klimaszewski (Naugatuck, Conn.) each had two hits for the Blue Jays.

Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.), Erin Smith (Gorham, Maine), Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) and Mazie Baldarelli (Fitchburg, Mass.) swung into one hit apiece in the setback for Lasell.

Lasell is at Mount Ida next in a conference doubleheader Sunday at noon, while USJ plays at St. Joseph's College of Maine in a GNAC doubleheader, also at noon.
