Softball Falls in Final Matchups of Spring Break to Fitchburg St. and Plymouth St.

Clermont, Fla. (3/17/16) – The Lasell College softball team (3-7-0) dropped its final doubleheader of THE Spring Games Tournament to Fitchburg St., 5-3, and Plymouth St., 8-0, in five innings, on Thursday, March 17.

Fitchburg  St. 5, Lasell 3 

Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) threw a complete game for Lasell finishing with for four earned runs and 14 hits in the loss. Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.) led the Lasers in offense batting 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. 

Fitchburg was led by Jessalynne Brown and Emily Comtois who batted 2-for-4 and 3-for-4, respectively. The two combined for one run scored, four RBI, and one double. 

The Falcons hit early and often as two runs were scored in the first inning off of a Brown double and a Comtois single scoring Marissa Gemma (Leominster, Mass.) and Brown, respectively. Another run by Fitchburg in the second gave the Falcons a 3-0 advantage, until DeAngelis tripled off of Kaylee Sylvestre (Central Falls, R.I.) scoring Erin Smith (Gorham, Maine) and Ashley Gatchell (Franklin, Mass.), cutting Fitchburg's lead to two, 4-2. 

The fourth inning saw Lasell's only other run when Tessa Beane grounded out to shortstop advancing Erin Larghi (Wakefield, R.I.) to third and then home on the throw. The Falcons scored one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Brown hit her first single scoring Gemma giving Fitchburg its fourth in of the tournament, 5-3.

Plymouth St. 8, Lasell 0 – Five innings

Junior Erin Smith batted 2-for-2, while DeAngelis and Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.) hit 1-for-2 each in the loss. 

Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) was the offensive leader for the game batting 2-for-2 with five RBI, one walk, and two doubles. Cassidy Emerson (Concord, N.H.) tallied two RBI in the victory batting 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one walk. Freshman pitcher Kayla Mathieu (Fairfax, Vt.) pitched the five-inning game striking out six and allowing four hits. 

The two teams remained scoreless heading into the top of the third as the Panthers combined for four hits and three walks to score four runs, 4-0. Three more runs in the top of the fourth from an Emerson single scoring Katie Kennard (Concord, N.H.) and a Roberts' double scoring Abrie Davis (Amherst, N.H.) put the Plymouth St. ahead 7-0. The Panthers squeezed in one final run in the fifth inning and Mathieu held the Lasers giving Plymouth St. its fifth win of the tournament.

Lasell will host non-conference Regis on Tuesday, March 29 in a 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. doubleheader at Taylor Field.
