Softball Earns Split with Clarkson, Bates

Clermont, Fla. (3/16/16) – The Lasell College softball team (3-5-0) fell to Clarkson, 4-0, and earned its third win against Bates, 12-9 in its fourth doubleheader of the season at the Legends Way Complex in Clermont, Fla.

Clarkson 4, Lasell 0

Lasell's five hits were not enough as Clarkson's four hits powered to a 4-0 game. Erin Smith (Gorham, Maine) batted 2-for-3 for the Lasers, while the pitching duo of Krystel Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) and Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) combined for four strikeouts and allowed three walks. 

The Golden Knights was led by shortstop Raeanna Dunn (McGraw, N.Y.) who hit 1-for-2 in the leadoff spot with a triple, two runs scored, two RBI, and one walk. 

The Lasers left seven on base in the loss as the Golden Knights' first and second batters recorded the only RBI of the game. Clarkson's pitching staff of Meg Tully (Cicero, N.Y.) and Maggie Stark (Newsfields, N.H.) tallied a combined total of seven strikeouts as they held the Lasers off for seven scoreless innings.

Clarkson was able to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the first as Dunn walked and Sara Armstrong (East Amherst, N.Y.) was caught in a rundown allowing Dunn to score from third. The game remained, 1-0, until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Golden Knights leadoff batter tripled to right center field scoring two, followed by an Armstrong single allowing Dunn to score giving Clarkson the advantage and the game, 4-0. 

Lasell 12, Bates 9

Senior centerfielder Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.) batted 4-for-5, recording one run, a triple and four RBI. The pitching duo of junior Krystel Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) and Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) combined for four strikeouts and two walks, nine earned runs, and 13 hits allowed in the win. 

Shortstop Maddie Inlow (Flamouth, Maine) batted 4-for-4, hit two doubles, scored once, and recorded three RBI, while pitchers Kylie Martin (Poland, Maine) and Mimi Crowley (Barnstable, Mass.) combined for five strikeouts, allowed three walks, 14 hits, and three earned runs. 

The Lasers jumped out to an early 2-0 start in the first inning when Bergin scored off of a wild pitch and Erin Smith (Gorham, Maine) crossed home on a fielder's choice. The Bobcats cut the deficit to one, 2-1, as Maria Garbarino (Reading, Mass.) doubled home Tori Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.). In DeAngelis' second at bat, she tripled into left center field scoring Smith and Maggie King (Sandy Creek, N.Y.) giving the Lasers the advantage, 4-1. Bates would not back down as it took the lead in the third and fourth innings with six total runs, five hits and one walk, 7-4. 

Lasell broke open the game with eight runs in the top of the fifth off of four hits, a fielder's choice and a walk, putting the Lasers up 12-7. The Bobcats were only able to score two more runs in the bottom of the second inning, before the teams remained scoreless in the seventh giving Lasell its third win of the tournament, 12-9. 

Lasell will conclude its spring break trip with a double header against Fitchburg St. at 1 p.m. and Plymouth St. at 3 p.m. at the Foundation Academy in THE Spring Games.
