Softball Splits Doubleheader on Spring Trip

Clermont, Fla. (3/14/16) – The Lasell College softball team (2-4-0) split its third doubleheader of the season with a win against New England College 11-5, and a loss to UMass Boston, 4-3, at the Legends Way Complex in Clermont, Fla.   

Lasell 11, New England College 5 

Fifteen hits from the Lasers gave it the advantage in an 11-5 defeat of New England College. Senior Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.) batted 3-for-4 recording two RBI, one run, and one walk. Junior third baseman Marissa Spivey (Brockton, Mass.) tallied three RBI in her first start as she hit 2-for-3, crossed the plate once, and tallied a walk. Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) threw a complete game and gave up two earned runs, two walks, and struck out four.

The Pilgrim's Rebecca Allen led New England College batting 3-for-5 with a double, a homerun, two RBI and three runs.

New England jumped out to a 3-0 start in the bottom of first off of an error, a single and a double. The Lasers responded in the third with a run of its own and then took the lead in the fourth, 4-3, with three runs capped by a grounder by Spivey, single by Mickayla Cobb (Middleboro, Mass.), and single by LeBlanc. Rebecca Allen rocketed a homerun off of Bergin in the bottom of the fourth to knot the game at 4.

The Lasers persisted with four runs in the fifth starting it off with an error by Jamie Ray (Tewksbury, Mass.), in which Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.) reached first on. A series including a sac bunt and two singles drove in the first run starting Lasell's one-out rally. Four-straight hits drove in the other three runs giving Lasell the advantage, 8-4. The Pilgrims squeezed in one final run in the bottom of the sixth, but Lasell continued pressuring scoring three final runs in the top of the seventh giving it its second win of the tournament.

UMass Boston 6, Lasell 3

Senior centerfielder Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.) batted 3-for-4, recording one of the three RBI. The pitching duo of junior Krystel Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) and Lydia Lewis-Hicks (Seekonk, Mass.) combined for four strikeouts and two walks, four earned runs, and nine hits allowed in the loss.

Freshman pitcher Vic Zechello struck out four, walked three, and let up nine hits recording the win, while Roxanne Vento batted 3-for-3 for the Beacons with two RBI, one walk, and one run scored.

The two teams remained scoreless until UMass Boston came up in the top of the third with three runs off of a sacrifice fly, a double and a single. The Lasers held the Beacons to no runs until the bats connected again in the sixth off a popup to left to break open the game 5-0. The Beacons scored one more insurance run off of Vento's single before the Lasers took advantage of a two-out rally, which included two walks, one error, and three hits to cut the deficit to three in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-3 loss.

Lasell will play Clarkson at 3 p.m. and Bates at 7 p.m. at the Legends Way Complex in their third double-header of THE Spring Games.
