Softball Splits in Second Season Twinbill

Clermont, Fla. (3/14/16) – The Lasell College softball team (1-3-0) split its second twinbill of the season with a loss to Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham, 21-5, in five innings and  a victory over North Park University, 4-3, at the Legends Way Complex in Clermont, Fla.

FDU- Florham 21, Lasell 5 – 5 innings

The Lasers' four runs were scored off of hits from Senior Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.), senior Erin Larghi (Wakefield, R.I.), freshman Tessa Beane (Swampscott, Mass.), and senior Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.). Sophomore Laura MacLeod also batted 1-for-2 with a walk, and two runs.

The Devils' sophomore pitcher Audrie Thomas (Belford, N.J.) faced 26 batters in the five-inning defeat and recorded two strikeouts and allowed two walks and six hits.

FDU scored in each of the five innings with the fifth inning breaking open the game with 14 hits. The Lasers cut the deficit to two, 3-1, with a run in the bottom of the second off an error by Thomas allowing MacLeod to score.

In the top of the third, Wynne McCann (Boyertown, Pa.) slammed a homerun off of Bergin, and Lasell was able to get the run back after Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.) scored off of another error by the pitcher. The Devils persisted with the bats as they continued to score 17 more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Lasers offense came alive in the fifth but was not enough as they only cut the deficit to 16, 21-5.

Lasell 4, North Park 3

Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.) batted 2-for-2, recording two stolen bases, two RBI, and one walk as she helped the Lasers win the first game of the 2016 season. The pitching duo of starter Krystel Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) and Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.), who recorded her first save of the season, combined for two strikeouts and allowed two walks, three earned runs, and 10 hits.

The two teams remained scoreless until the Lasers jumped on board with Larghi scoring off of a RBI from Ashley Gatchell (Franklin, Mass.) who reached on a fielder's choice. The fifth inning saw no runs as well, as the bulk of the scoring came in the sixth when Lasell came up with three runs off a LeBlanc single, Smith grounding out to the pitcher, and a DeAngelis single. North Park cut the deficit to two, 4-2, as Nicole Kruckman (Libertyville, Ill.) hit a double scoring Kylee Witt (Belvidere, Ill.) and Simone Carroll (Joliet, Ill.) tallied her only hit with a single scoring Kruckman.

The Vikings recorded three-straight putouts in the top of the seventh and used the momentum to score one more run, but it was not enough to top the Lasers, 4-3.

Lasell will play New England College at 3 p.m. and UMass Boston at 7 p.m. at the Legends Way Complex in their third double-header of THE Spring Games
