Lasers Offense Stymied as JWU Sweeps Softball Doubleheader
NEWTON, Mass. (4/11/14) - The Lasell College softball team dropped a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference games to visiting Johnson and Wales University, 8-0 and 10-1 at Taylor Field. The Lasers slipped to 13-15 for the 2014 campaign and 6-8 in GNAC games while Johnson and Wales broke the 20-win mark, improving to 20-8 on the season and 11-3 in league contests.
 

Game One – JWU 8 – Lasell 0

Taylor Cwalinski (Jackson, N.J.) twirled a one-hit shutout for Johnson and Wales while striking out 11 hitters in five innings to earn the win for the Wildcats.

Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Mass.) recorded the Lasers sole hit, a single in the fifth inning, that prevented Cwalinski from completing her no-hit bid. Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss in the circle for Lasell, allowing 12 hits and eight runs, seven earned in five innings.

Cwalinski doubled and drove in a pair of runs in addition to her performance on the slab for Johnson and Wales. Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y.) singled three times while knocking in three runs and scoring once and Ariana Caffeso (Johnston, R.I.) went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and two batted in for the Wildcats. Diana Amendolara (Newton, Pa.) singled and doubled while scoring twice as well for JWU.

JWU opened the second inning with a pair of singles by Amendolara and Caffeso, with both players advancing to second and third on a sacrifice bunt before coming in to score on Gardner's single to left field.

The visitors tacked on six runs in the third inning, scoring two on a single by Caffeso, and one on a single by Jessica George (Andover, N.H.). Gardner then followed with an RBI single and a two-run double by Cwalinski completed the scoring for the Wildcats.

Bergin shut down JWU over the final two innings but Lasell was unable to get their offense untracked against Cwalinski, falling 8-0 in five innings.

Game Two – JWU 10 – Lasell 1

The Wildcats got their second dominating performance on in the circle in two games when Tayla Gardner limited Lasell to one unearned run on two hits through seven innings while striking out eight.

Eileen Bergin singled in the sole run for Lasell and Emily DeAngelis singled for the second straight game while Santina Antoshak (Closter, N.J.) scored the lone run for Lasell after reaching on a JWU error. Krystal Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) took the loss for Lasell, yielding 10 runs, nine earned in six and a third innings of work.

Gardner had a three-run double to lead the way at the dish for Johnson and Wales, Emily Gorecki (Bremerton, Wash.) doubled twice while scoring a run and knocking in one as well, and Ariana Caffeso and Kaycee Babineau (Medway, Mass.) each singled twice for the Wildcats.

JWU jumped on Lasell early, posting six runs in the second inning, getting a bases loaded walk to Rebecca Manchester (Rehoboth, Mass.) to force in the first run, a run scoring single by Babineau and a three-run double to right-center by Gardner before Gardner scored on a double by Gorecki to make it a 6-0 game.

Lasell got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Santina Antoshak reached on an error to lead off the inning. Antoshak advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, coming into to score on a single by Bergin.

JWU tacked on a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by pinch hitter Brooke Lieberman (Florham Park, R.I.) before adding three more in the top of the seventh to produce the 10-1 final score.

Johnson and Wales will return to the diamond on Sunday April 13th when they host Suffolk University at 12:00 p.m. while Lasell is back in action tomorrow, Saturday April 12th as they host Simmons College in their final regular season home game starting at 12:00 p.m. Lasell will honor seniors Santina Antoshak, Courtney Moen (Brookfield, Mass.) and Samantha Whynot (Randolph, Mass.) prior to the GNAC doubleheader.
