Brandeis Takes Two from Lasell in Softball

WALTHAM, Mass. (4/8/14) – The Lasell College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games at Brandeis University on Tuesday afternoon. Lasell slid to 13-13 on the season with the losses while the Judges climbed to 13-9.

Game One – Brandeis 8 – Lasell 0

The Lasers struggled to get their bats going in the first game of the twinbill, notching just one hit while falling 8-0 in six innings. Michaelea Grady recorded a two-out single in the second inning, Courtney Moen reached base on a hit-by-pitch and Nicole LeBlanc walked in the loss. Eileen Bergin took the loss for Lasell, allowing eight runs, six earned on nine hits while striking out three in the game.

Melissa Nolan threw the first four innings for Brandeis, allowing no runs on one hit and fanning eight before being replaced by Melissa Soleimani who tossed two scoreless innings while striking out a pair. Amanda Genovese went 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles and three runs score for the Judges, and Liana Moss hit a two-run homerun to help propel Brandeis to the win.

Genovese singled to open the game for Brandeis and Moss sent a one-out offering from Bergin over the centerfield fence to give Brandeis a 2-0 lead early. Bergin kept the Judges offense in check after that, allowing just one hit over the next three innings to keep Lasell within two runs of Brandeis. The Judges eventually broke through again in the fifth inning, as Genovese singled and stole second to start things off. Bergin got the next two batters and appeared to be on track to escape the jam again, but back-to-back singles plated a run and left runenrs on the corners with Lasell still looking for a third out. A wild pitch and three straight errors by the Lasers allowed three more runs to score, pushing the Brandeis lead to 6-0 through five innings.

The Judges tacked on two more in the sixth inning to solidify the 8-0 victory.

Game Two – Brandeis 14 – Lasell 1

Lasell managed more offense in the second game, getting two singles each from Santina Antoshak and Nicole LeBlanc and one apiece from Courtney Moen and Emily Noll with Antoshak coming in to score on a Moen single. The Lasers were unable to contain Brandeis offensively however, as Krystal Enko allowed 12 runs in three innings of work and Samantha Whynot yielded two more run while throwing two innings in relief.

Brandeis scored five times in the first inning, added three more in the second and four more in the third to open up a 12-1 lead, tacking on two more in the fourth inning to produce the 14-1 final score.
