NEWTON, Mass. (4/6/14) – The Lasell College softball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader against visiting Suffolk on Sunday afternoon at Taylor Field. Suffolk came out on top, 8-0 in the first game before the Lasers rebounded with a come from behind 8-5 win in game two. Lasell improved to 13-11 on the season and 6-6 in the conference while Suffolk stands at 6-16 overall and 1-7 in league games.
Game One - Suffolk 8 – Lasell 0
Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.) went 1-for-2 with a double for Lasell, and Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.), Santina Antoshak (Closter, N.J.) and Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.) each singled for the Lasers who only managed four hits in the defeat. Eileen Bergin allowed eight runs, four runs, on 11 hits while taking the loss for the Lasers.
Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass.) went 2-for-4 at the dish with a double, home run, three runs scored and three knocked in for Suffolk. Anna Grace Maggs (Schenectady, N.Y.) had two doubles and a single with a run and two batted in. Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) added a pair of singles for Suffolk, who got a complete game shutout from Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) on the slab as she held Lasell to four hits while striking out four in five innings of work.
McAndrews opened the scoring for Suffolk with a two-out solo homerun over the left field fence in the top of the first inning and an RBI single by Sarah Middleton (Otis, Mass.) in the top of the second made it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
Anna Grace Maggs knocked in a run in the top of the third with a double, eventually coming in to score on an error by Lasell to make it a 4-0 advantage for Suffolk. Suffolk tacked on four more in the top of the fourth, using a two-RBI double from McAndrews, and RBI double by Maggs and adding one more on a Lasell error to push the score to the final 8-0 margin.
Game Two – Lasell 8 – Suffolk 5
The Lasers used an eight run outburst in the home half of the sixth inning to dig their way out of a four run deficit, winning 8-5 in the second game of the afternoon. Nicole LeBlanc tripled and singled, scoring two runs and driving in three more, Denise Archetto (Cranston, R.I.) rapped a single and a double with a run scored and one batted in for Lasell. Krystal Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) went the distance in the circle for Lasell, allowing five runs, four earned on 11 hits in seven innings of work to earn her sixth win of the season.
Erin McAndrews had a single and a double for Suffolk and Kristen Young and Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.J.) each singled twice. Sarah Chasse took the loss for Suffolk, allowing five runs, one earned on seven hits and Paige Stanley (Fair Haven, N.J.) allowed three runs, all unearned in two-thirds of an inning of work.
Suffolk got on the board first in the second game, taking a 1-0 lead on and RBI groundout by Maggs that plated Chasse after she reached on an error. The Rams scored three more runs in the top of the third inning, getting on a single by Maggs, adding two more on a Lasell error and a wild pitch that gave the visitors a 4-0 lead.
Lasell found their offense in the home half of the sixth inning, starting the inning with a single by LeBlanc and a double by Archetto to put runners on second and third with nobody out. LeBlanc scored as Emily Noll (Weymouth, Mass.) reached on an error to get Lasell on the board and make it a 4-1 game. Molly Pritchett (Lebanon, Maine) singled loading the bases and a walk to DeAngelis forced in a run and made it 4-2 with Suffolk in front. Chasse gave way to Paige Stanley pitching for Suffolk, but the Lasers rally kept rolling. Emily Noll was forced at the plate for the second out, but when Courtney Moen (Brookfield, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice that saw all the runners be safe, Lasell cut the deficit to 4-3. Eileen Bergin walked to force in the tying run and LeBlanc followed with a triple to right-center field that cleared the bases and gave Lasell their first lead of the game at 7-4. LeBlanc came in to score on a single by Archetto as the Lasers sent 11 players to the plate in the eight-run inning, taking an 8-4 edge.
McAndrews doubled with one out, coming in to score on a two-out single by Meredith Ball to make it 8-5, but Enko got the third out to escape the trouble and earn the victory.
Suffolk hosts Pine Manor on Tuesday April 8th while Lasell will return to the diamond on Tuesday the 8th as well, when they host Brandeis University at 3:00 p.m. at Taylor Field.
