Softball Drops a Pair to St. Joseph's in GNAC Play

NEWTON, Mass. (4/5/14) – The Lasell College softball team dropped a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference games to St. Joseph's College of Maine, 4-0 and 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field. The Lasers slipped to 12-10 overall and 5-5 in league games while St. Joseph's remained undefeated in league play at 8-0 while climbing to 16-2 on the season.

Game One – St. Joseph's (Maine) 4 – Lasell 0

Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss on the slab for Lasell, going all seven innings and allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out three. Denise Archetto (Cranston, R.I.) notched the lone hit of the game for Lasell, singling in the second inning.

Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine) singled and homered for St. Joseph's, scoring once and driving in two in the victory. Kim Jordan (Bangor, Maine) singled and doubled for the Monks, coming in to score twice while Lindsay Moore (Barrington, N.H.) singled twice and knocked in a pair and Danica Gleason (So. Portland, Maine) finished with a pair of singles and a run scored. Rae-Marie Copan (Newton, Mass.) tossed a one-hit shutout for St. Joseph's striking out two to pick up her eighth win of the season.

Jordan doubled to lead-off the game for the Monks and coming in to score on a single by Moore to put the visitors ahead 1-0. Gleason reached with two outs in the top of the third when she was hit by a pitch and Hendrix followed with a two-run home run to make it 3-0 in St. Joseph's favor. Jordan singled to open the fifth inning for the Monks, eventually coming in to score on a single by Moore to produce the final -0 margin.

Game Two – St. Joseph's (Maine) 8 – Lasell 0

Nicole LeBlanc (Eason, Mass.) and Emily Noll (Weymouth, Mass.) each singled once as the Lasers offense was stymied for the second straight game in the loss. Krystal Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) took the loss for Lasell, allowing eight runs, six earned on 11 hits in five innings of work.

Theresa Hendrix homered for the second game in a row for St. Joseph's adding a triple, two runs and three RBI's and Danica Gleason doubled twice and scored a pair of runs. Laura Jordan (Orrington, Maine) spun a shutout in the second game, allowing two hitsin five innings to pick up her third win of the season in the circle.

Both teams struggled to get much going offensively through the first three innings, sending the game into the top of the fourth inning tied at 0-0. St. Joseph's got their offense on track in the top half of the inning, Gleason doubled and Hendrix followed with a two-run homer to make it 2-0 before an out was recorded. Sacrifice flies by Megen Pollini (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Kim Jordan made it a 4-0 game and the Monks extended the lead to 5-0 on a RBI double by Connie Grovo (Limington, Maine).

The Monks added three more in the top of the fifth inning to secure the victory 8-0, using a run scoring triple by Hendrix to plate Gleason, as well an RBI groundout by Melissa Mayhew (Hiram, Maine) and a run scoring single by Carla Tripp (Lovell, Maine) to produce the final margin.
