Softball Returns to Winning Ways with Sweep of Anna Maria

Worcester, Mass. – The Lasell College softball team swept a doubleheader against Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at WPI Rooftop Field on Friday afternoon. The Lasers took game one 9-0 in five innings and the nightcap 10-4. Anna Maria falls to 1-15 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while Lasell improves to 12-8 on the season and 5-3 in the GNAC.

Game One: Lasell 9, Anna Maria 0

After playing three scoreless innings the Lasers tallied seven runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Freshman Emily Noll (Weymouth, Mass.) opened the scoring with an RBI double that plated Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.) who had led off the inning with a single up the middle. Michaelea Grady (Worcester, Mass.) followed with a fielder's choice to pick up and RBI and LeBlanc stole home to make it a 3-0 game. Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.) delivered the big hit of the inning with a double down the left field line that scored two more Lasers and Courtney Moen (Brookfield, Mass.) and LeBlanc would add RBI hits for the 7-0 lead.

Anna Maria could only muster three hits on the afternoon with Katie Moran (Leicester, Mass.), Cristina Turley (Waterford, Conn.) and Nichole Lowe (Saugus, Mass.) each collecting singles.

Lasell would add a pair of runs in the top of the fifth for the 9-0 run rule final. Sophomore Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) earned her seventh win of the season pitching five scoreless innings with ten strikeouts. Sophomore Angela Vousboukis (Swampscott, Mass.) suffered the loss for the AMCATS allowing seven runs on eight hits with two strikeouts over four innings. Freshman Alexis Romano (Lowell, Mass.) pitched an inning of relief allowing two earned runs on three hits.

Game Two: Lasell 10, Anna Maria 4

Anna Maria rallied in the bottom of the fifth frame scoring four runs to cut the deficit to 10-4 but couldn't get any closer in the game two loss.

Lasell opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning and added a single run in the second inning to grab a 4-0 lead after two complete innings.

Lasell doubled the lead to 8-0 in the top of the third inning. Emily DeAngelis delivered a bases loaded double to left field that score two runs and Krystel Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) followed one batter later stroking a 2-RBI single to left field.

Trailing 10-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning the AMCATS rallied. Junior Justine Lalonde (Shirley, NY) opened the frame with a seeing-eye single to centerfield  and came around to score two batters later on a Lasers defensive miscue which allowed Ashley George (Leicester, Mass.) to reach base. George crossed home on a Cristina Turley sacrifice fly to right field. Ashley Anderson (Palmer, Mass.) and Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, Mass.) would follow with RBI singles to make it a 10-4 ballgame.

Laser hurler Krystel Enko would stymie the AMCATS in the sixth and seventh inning en route to her fifth win of the season. Nicole Lowe suffered the loss for the AMCATS.

The Lasell College team Softball is teaming up with the American Cancer Society to host a Coaches vs.Cancer event.  On April 5th the team will be working to beat a common foe-cancer.
