Softball Splits Opening Doubleheader Against Albright

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (3/18/14) – The Lasell College softball team split a doubleheader against Albright College to open their 2014 season. Lasell captured the first game 9-7 before falling 9-1 in the second game of the twinbill.

Game One – Lasell 9 – Albright 7

Santina Antoshak tripled and had a pair of singles while scoring three times and driving in one for the Lasers and Courtney Moen tripled and singled, scoring once and driving in three runs. Nicole LeBlanc added a single and a double with a run and an RBI and Molly Pritchett singled twice while driving in two runs for the Lasers. Eileen Bergin went all seven innings for Lasell on the slab, yielding eight hits and seven runs, four earned to record her first win of the season.

After Albright took a 2-0 lead on a two-run homerun in the top of the first inning Lasell came right back and scored three runs of their own in the home half of the first. A pair of Albright errors and a walk to Moen loaded the bases for Lasell with nobody out. Antoshak scored on a LeBlanc sacrifice fly,  and Pritchett followed two batters later with a two-run single to give Lasell a 3-2 lead.

Albright picked up a pair of runs in the top of the third to reclaim the lead, 4-3 then held the Lasers scoreless in the home half of the inning. Antoshak tripled with one out in the Lasell fourth, coming in to score on a groundout by Moen to tie the score at 4-4.

Lasell exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 9-4 lead. LeBlanc led off with a single and Emily DeAngelis walked followed by Denise Archetto reaching on an error to load the bases for Lasell with nobody out. Michaelea Grady reached on a fielder's choice that forced DeAngelis at third and driving in LeBlanc. Emily Noll singled, scoring Archetto and moving Grady along to third with two outs. Noll took second and Antoshak singled, scoring Grady and leaving Lasell with runners on the corners and two outs. Moen completed the offensive outburst with a two-run triple to score Antoshak and Noll.

Albright took two runs back in the top of the sixth to cut the Lasell lead to 9-6, tacking on another in the seventh but were unable to rally all the way back, allowing Lasell to win game one.

Game Two – Albright 9 – Lasell 1

Nicole LeBlanc singled twice for Lasell, Santina Antoshak singled and scored while Courtney Moen singled and knocked in a run but the Lasers bats were largely quieted in the second game of the doubleheader. Samantha Whynot took the loss in the circle for Lasell, throwing five innings and allowing nine runs, four earned, on nine hits and four walks.

Albright scored in the top of the first and Lasell tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first but Albright put the game away with a pair of big innings, scoring four in the second and four more in the third to finish with a 9-1 win.
