Softball Succumbs to St. Joseph’s (Conn.) in GNAC Doubleheader

Newton, Mass. (4/20/13) – The Lasell College softball team lost a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference games against the visiting Blue Jays of the University of St. Joseph's (Conn.) 3-1 and 8-2 on Saturday afternoon. Lasell fell to 8-26 overall and 5-17 in GNAC play while USJ climbed to 28-10 for the year and 16-6 in league contests.

Game One:

Nicole LeBlanc had a single and a double with an RBI for Lasell, and Amanda Szidat singled and scored a run for Lasell, combining for the hosts three hits in the game. Alison Saluti threw seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while taking the loss.

Ashley Gall had a double and a homerun to lead the Blue Jays offense, and Patti Sciampaglia earned the win, going seven innings and allowing one run on three hits.

Haley McCall singled to open the game, coming around to score on an RBI groundout to give USJ a 1-0 lead in the first. A solo home run by Gall in the top of the fourth made it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.

Lasell got a run back in the home half of the fourth inning when Szidat reached on a two-out single, coming in to score on a double by LeBlanc to make it 2-1.

USJ tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to make it 3-1, and closed out the Lasers in the bottom of the inning to secure the 3-1 victory.

Game Two:

Lasell dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 8-2 at the hands of the Blue Jays.

Emily DeAngelis hit a solo home run for Lasell, while Eileen Bergin took the loss in the circle. Bergin threw all seven innings, allowing eight runs, five earned, on nine hits and four walks in the contest.

Gall had a single and a double in the second game for USJ, as eight different hitters combined for nine hits on the afternoon. Hummel earned the complete game victory, holding Lasell to two runs on five hits and striking out three.

McCall singled, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a Hummel sacrifice fly to give USJ a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Blue Jays added another run in the top of the third on an RBI double off the bat of Gall, then tacked on another in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

DeAngelis homered in the Lasell half of the fifth inning to make it 3-1, but USJ exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth to break the game open the held on for the 8-2 victory.

Lasell will wrap up their 2013 season when they play Anna Maria College at home on Monday April 22nd at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
