Lasell Splits with Emerson in GNAC Softball Action

Newton, Mass. (4/5/2013) – The Lasell College softball team split their doubleheader with Emerson who was undefeated in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play. The Lasers took the first game 7-1, while Emerson won game two 11-0. The Lions stand at 12-10 on the year overall and are 9-1 in the conference. Lasell moves to 4-5 in GNAC action while standing at 6-13 overall.

Game 1

Lasell's Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.) was 3 for 4 at the plate scoring a pair of runs and driving in two with a homerun and a two singles. Amanda Szidat (Westford, Mass.) hit a two-run homerun and Denise Archetto (Cranston, R.I.) and Erin Larghi (Wakefield, R.I.) each added a pair of singles. Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) took the win, tossing a complete game giving up one run on seven hits and striking out six.

Brittany Rochford (Irvine, Calif.) had a pair of singles to lead Emerson and Alexandra Wysota (Manhasset, N.Y.) drove in the Lions lone run of the game with a single. Alexandra Magistro (Hacketstown, N.J.) took the loss for Emerson giving up seven runs, six earned on 11 hits while recording five strikeouts.

The Lasers got on the board in the home half of the first when Santina Antoshak (Closter, N.J.) reached on a walk, and LeBlanc ripped a line drive that cleared the centerfield fence for a two-run homerun. Lasell then strung together four consecutive singles with Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.) knocking in Archetto to give Lasell a 3-0 lead.

Emerson got one run back in the top of the second inning when Shannon Torosian (Stoneham, Mass.) walked, eventually scoring on a fielder's choice off the bat of Wysota.

Lasell added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning courtesy of a two-run home run from Amanda Szidat and three singles from LeBlanc, Archetto and Larghi scoring LeBlanc.

LeBlanc singled to open the bottom of the fourth, and Archetto reached on an error putting runners on first and second with nobody out for Lasell. A sacrifice bunt by Larghi moved the runners up and Eileen Bergin reached on a hit by pitch loading the bases for Lasell. Archetto scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Emily DeAngelis giving the hosts a 7-1 lead.

Neither team was able to muster any more scoring, as Lasell earned the 7-1 victory.

Game 2

Emerson defeated Lasell 11-0 in the second game of the doubleheader behind a sterling performance on the mound as Alicia Daniele (Mahwah, NJ.) tossed a no-hitter. Daniele gave up four walks on the day and recorded seven strikeouts in the five inning affair.

Alison Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) recorded the loss as she struck out four, walked another, and gave eight runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. Samantha Whynot (Randolph, Mass.) came in relief for an inning where she allowed three runs on three hits.

Emerson centerfielder Brittany Rochford went 2-2 with two runs, two RBIs and was walked once. Shannon Torosian led the way for the Lions though as she went 2-3 where she had a home run, batted-in four and record run.

Torosian belted a three-run homerun in the top of the first staking Daniele to an early 3-0 lead. Torosian knocked in another run in the top of the third to push the Lions advantage to 4-0.

Daniele helped her own cause in the top of the fourth with an RBI double to go up 5-0 and the Lions tallied three more runs in inning to push their lead to 8-0. Emerson tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth to reach the 11-0 final.

The Lions go back to work on Saturday as they host a double-header against Suffolk, while Johnson & Wales will host two against Lasell, with the game one scheduled to start as 12:00 p.m.
