Myrtle Beach, S.C. (3/22/13) – The Lasell College softball team used 11 hits to score eight runs on their way to their second straight victory and third in four games when they defeated Grinnell 8-6 in their first game of the final day of their spring trip. The win pushes the Lasers record to 3-6 on the season, while Grinnell drops to 0-9 in the 2013 campaign.

Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.) finished with a single and a double, scored a run and drove in three for Lasell, Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.) had three singles, scoring twice and driving in one run, and Amanda Szidat (Westford, Mass.) finished with a double and two singles on the day. Samantha Whynot (Randolph, Mass.) earned the victory on the mound for the Lasers, allowing three runs on five hits through four innings, and Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) was credited with a save after throwing the final three innings while giving up three runs on a pair of hits and recording two strikeouts.

Jennifer Fulton was two for two on the day with a double for Grinnell and she scored a pair of runs, and Jordan Matosky finished with a pair of RBI's as well. Alyssa Bean suffered the loss for the Pioneers, giving up three runs on five hits while only completing one inning of work. Jennifer Fulton relieved Matosky and allowed five runs on six hits in five innings.

Santina Antoshak (Closter, N.J.) opened the bottom of the first with a single for Lasell, coming around to score on a one-out single by Denise Archetto. LeBlanc followed with a single of her own, and a run-scoring groundout pushed Archetto across to give Lasell a 2-0 lead. Emily DeAngelis followed with an RBI single, and the Lasers led 3-0 after one inning.

The Pioneers answered right back in the top half of the fifth inning, getting a pair of consecutive hits to put runners on second and third with only one out, before using a pair of fielder's choice grounders to plate two runs and cut the score to 3-2.

Eileen Bergin walked to open the Lasell half of the second inning and after a pair of Lasers were retired, a walk to Archetto put runners on first and second with two outs. LeBlanc singled in Bergin, and after a walk to Michaela Grady (Worcester, Mass.), DeAngelis doubled to drive in a pair giving Lasell a 6-2 lead.

Grinnell got one run back in the top of the third trimming the Lasers lead to 6-3, and then neither team could muster much of an attack in their next two trips to the plate.

Lasell added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning courtesy of a DeAngelis walk, and consecutive singles by Szidat and Bergin to push their lead to 8-3 heading into the final two innings.

The Pioneers would not go quietly, plating three runs in the top of the sixth frame, using a pair of walks, two singles and an error by Lasell to make it an 8-6 ballgame.

Lasell got runners on the corners in the home half of the sixth, but failed to score, but closed out the victory by keeping Grinnell off the board in the top of the seventh inning.
