Lasell Pairs Hot Bats with Stout Pitching to Defeat Rutgers-Newark

Myrtle Beach, S.C. (3/21/13) – The Lasell College softball team used a strong performance at the plate and a stingy pitching performance to defeat Rutgers-Newark 8-0. The Lasers improved to 2-6 with the victory while the Pioneers dipped to 2-4 on the year with the loss.

Alison Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) threw a three-hit shutout and struck out a pair to earn her second win of the season for Lasell. Santina Antoshak (Closter, N.J.) singled three times, scoring three runs for the Lasers, Emily DeAngelis (Shelton, Conn.) singled twice, collecting two RBI's and Denise Archetto (Cranston, R.I.) and Michaela Grady (Worcester, Mass.) each doubled and drove in a pair of runs in the victory.

Monica Bagan doubled, and Vanessa Romero and Monica Liotto both singled for Rutgers-Newark. Brianna Alicchio took the loss for the Pioneers, yielding eight runs, seven earned on nine hits.

Antoshak opened the bottom of the first with a single, eventually scoring on a passed ball to give Lasell a 1-0 lead.

Eileen Bergin (Shelton, Conn.) reached on an error to open the Lasell half of the third inning and after an Antoshak single, Courtney Moen (Brookfield, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice that saw all runners advance safely loading the bases for Lasell. Archetto walked forcing in a run for the Lasers, followed by an RBI single by Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.) and a two-run double by Grady, giving Lasell a 5-0 lead. A DeAngelis two-run single pushed the fifth and sixth runs of the inning across for Lasell, giving the Lasers a 7-0 lead.

Archetto doubled in Antoshak for the eighth run of the game for Lasell, and Lasell closed out the 8-0 victory.
