Lasell Falls Short Against Guilford

Myrtle Beach, S.C. (3/19/13) – The Lasell softball team dropped their fifth straight game on their spring trip, falling 3-1 to the Quakers of Guilford College. Lasell slipped to 0-5 on the year, while Guilford pushed their record to 10-8 on the season.

Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.) went two for three at the plate with a double and a run batted in, and Courtney Moen (Brookfield, Mass.) had a pair of singles in three at-bats for Lasell. Alison Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) was credited with the loss, going seven strong innings, allowing three runs, one earned on eight hits and fanning five hitters.

Cynthia Hayes went two for two with a double, scoring a pair of runs to spearhead the Quakers offense, while Marty Wilcox scored a run and knocked in one while finishing with a home run and double of her own. Autumn Yoder also chipped in a pair of singles for Guilford. Maggie Shaffer earned the complete game victory for Guilford, scattering five hits while holding Lasell to one run and striking out nine.

 Lasell opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Amanda Szidat (Westford, Mass.) worked a two-out walk, stole second base and scored on a single to right field by LeBlanc.

Guilford evened the score at 1-1 Hayes scored on a fielder's choice in the top of the third inning. Lasell got runners on second and third in the bottom half of the third inning, but were unable to regain their lead.

Both teams went scoreless in the fourth inning, and when Hayes double and scored on a Lasell throwing error the Quakers were on top 2-1. Wilcox helped Guilford add an insurance run in the top of the sixth with her home run to center field.

Lasell was unable to mount a threat in their final two at-bats, and dropped the contest, 3-1.
