Lasers Upend Falcons in Sweep of Doubleheader

NEWTON, MA-  Lasell softball swept Albertus Magnus today, upending the Falcons 26-2 in game one and 15-5 in game two.  Lasell enhances their overall record to 4-14 this season and their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record to 4-2.  Albertus remains on a 0-10 skid for the course of the season so far as well as 0-6 in the GNAC.

 

In game one, Lasell used 20 hits and six walks to put together 26 runs in just five innings.   Seven Lasers had multiple hits in the game led by Ashley Laramie (Lynn, MA) who went 4-for-5 with six RBI and four runs scored, including a double and a home run.

 

Talia DeChiara (Kingston, MA), Jacqueline Saluti (Braintree, MA), Michelle Torres (Waltham, MA), and Santina Antoshak (Closter, NJ) each produced three hits in game one.  DeChiara added four RBI and four runs, Saluti had one RBI and two runs, Torres matched with two RBI and two runs, and Antoshak scored three times and plated two runners. 

 

Kirsten Mammola (North Reading, MA) and Candace Hankard (Wakefield, MA) also put up a couple of hits and three runs scored each. Both of Mammola's hits were doubles on which she earned three RBI while Hankard had one RBI. 

 

Picking up her second win on the mound and the Lasers' third GNAC victory was Mammola who put in five innings of work and struck out six Falcons along the way.  Mammola allowed just five hits and two earned runs with no walks.

 

Sam Corso (Derby, CT) was charged with the loss for Albertus, allowing eight earned runs in four innings pitched. Corso also struck out three Laser batters.

 

Five Falcons supplied hits in the loss, which included RBI singles by Rebecca Samuels (West Haven, CT) and Tiffany Ortiz (New Haven, CT).  Bria Szymanski (Wallingford, CT) and Elizabeth Williams (West Haven, CT) rounded the bags for Albertus once each with both runs being scored in the second inning.

 

The win in game two was awarded to Alyson Bermudez (Londonderry, NH), her first collegiate win.  Bermudez surrendered just four hits and four earned runs in the 15-5 game, while walking two and retiring one batter on strikes in two innings.

 

Samantha Whynot (Randolph, MA) tossed for the final three innings of the game, and struck out four more Falcons en route to the five inning victory.  Whynot relinquished four hits and no runs in the game, while walking one. 

 

The Lasers bats remained powerful in the second game, with Mammola and Saluti each knocking three hits and Torres adding two more.   Mammola went 3-for-3 with two doubles, four RBI, and three runs while Saluti went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored. Torres plated three runs on her two hits and came home herself once. 

 

Courtney Moen (Brookfield, MA) and Kelly Silvia (Oak Bluffs, MA) each provided a hit and two RBI.  Moen also walked twice and scored one run.

 

Four Albertus pitchers saw time on the hill in game two, but it was Melissa Manning (Milford, CT) that was whacked with the loss.  

 

Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, CT) and Corso each had a two-base hit in the game with both players earning two-RBI.  Shanilya Bush (New Haven, CT) picked up the final RBI for the Falcons with one hit and Krista LaBissioniere (Meriden, CT) went 2-for-3 with one run. 

 

On Monday, Lasell will host St. Joseph College of Connecticut in a make-up game that was rescheduled from last Saturday.  The Lasers and the Blue Jays will meet on Taylor Field at 3:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.
