Softball Defeated by Vikings and Hawks

FORT MYERS, FL-- The Lasell College Lasers were defeated by the Salem State Vikings, 9-1, and the Roger Williams Hawks, 1-0, on Wednesday in non-conference softball action at the Lee County Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Lasers fell behind 2-0 by the second inning of the Salem State game and did not record their only run of the contest until the top of the fifth.  The Vikings rallied for six additional runs in the bottom of the same inning, as well as one more run in the latter-half of the sixth, for the final 9-1 victory.

Sophomore Jacqueline Saluti (Braintree, MA) went two-for-three at bat and made six outs in the field for Lasell.  Junior Kelly Silvia (Oaks Bluff, MA) produced an RBI for the Lasers on a sacrifice hit and sophomore Talia DeChiara (Kingston, MA) and freshman Candace Hankard (Wakefield, MA) knocked a hit each.

Senior outfielder Tricia Culver (Northampton, MA) was the solo Laser to make the trip around the bags and freshman pitcher Alison Saluti (Braintree, MA) turned away five Viking batters in the setback.

Against Roger Williams, Lasell’s junior pitcher Kirsten Mammola (North Reading, MA) struck out three batters, while allowing just three hits and one run in seven innings. Unfortunately for the Lasers, the one run that Roger Williams scored in the top of the seventh inning was all that was needed to earn the win.

Freshman Rachelle Haas (Middleton, MA) notched two singles in the contest while fellow freshman Nikki Giatas (Billerica, MA) and DeChiara each tallied one hit.  Jacqueline Saluti had 12 putouts at first base.

The Lasers fell to 1-7 this season after the fourth day of competition at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic and will challenge Richard Stockton College and Fitchburg State College next on Thursday, March 18th.
