Lasers Split with Pine Manor on Senior Day; finish 6th in GNAC

Newton, Mass-  The Lasers and the Gators split in a softball doubleheader  Sunday on Taylor Field.  Lasell took the first contest 8-5 and Pine Manor snuck by with a 4-2 second game after a late Gator homerun in the seventh.  Pine Manor has finished the season ranked 4th in the GNAC and the Lasers end in 6th as the team's head into the first round of the GNAC tournament on Tuesday.

 

The Lasers came out with one run in the first before Pine Manor clocked three runs scored in the second.  The Lasers tied things up in the third with two more runs, and ran away with the game in the fourth, scoring five runs on three hits and three errors.

 

Lasell's junior designated hitter Kelly Barden (Quincy, Mass.) went 3-for-3 hitting in the first game, singling in both the first and the third innings, and knocking a two-RBI double to right center in the fourth. 

 

Leftfielder Michelle Torres (Waltham, Mass.) also had a fine day at the bats, producing three hits, including one double, while also scoring three runs and earning an RBI.  Senior Heather Rose (West Roxbury, Mass.) went 1-3 in game one, hitting a triple into left centerfield in the third to earn an RBI as Torres scored.

 

Kirsten Mammola (North Reading, Mass.) was the winner pitching seven innings, striking out three en route to the victory.

 

Courtney Wallace (Steep Falls, ME) and Kayla Ferrara (South Portland, ME) each had two hits for the visitors, Wallace earning one RBI.

 

Ferrara's eighth homerun of the season gave Pine Manor the win in the nightcap.  The teams were tied at 2-all heading into the seventh inning, when Wallace put the go-ahead run on base with a triple down the right field line.  The next at-bat was Ferrara, who's home-run over the right center fence led the Gators to victory.

The Lasers had last ups, but did not score, leaving one on base to end the game 4-2.

Ashley Laramie (Lynn, Mass.) went 3-for-3 in the second, firing her sixth homerun of the year to left field to score the tying run in the sixth.  Torres earned the other RBI sending Kerrie Starkey (Keene, NH) home with a sacrifice fly.

Tara Doehler (Lakeville, Mass.) earned the win in seven innings, retiring three batters in the process.

Lasell will play in the first round of the GNAC tournament at home on Tuesday, April 21st at 4:30 p.m.  The Lasers will face 7th seeded Rivier College.
