East Providence, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University softball team dropped a pair of decisions in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header with Lasell at Pierce Field on Friday afternoon. Lasell posted a 6-5 win in the opener and finished the sweep with a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, Lasell took the 2-0 lead in the top of the second on
an RBI single by junior Tricia Culver
(Northampton, Mass.) and an RBI groundout by sophomore
Kelly Silvia (Oak Bluffs, Mass.). JWU responded in
the bottom of the second when an RBI single by sophomore Amanda Rae
Sullivan (East Granby, Conn.) cut the lead to 2-1.
The Wildcats then tied the game in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by freshman Korissa Bailey (Pelham, N.H.). After Lasell took the 3-2 advantage in the top of the fourth, JWU responded again in the bottom of the fourth when a run scoring triple by freshman Olivia England (Natick, Mass.) knotted the game at 3-3. The Wildcats took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth after a two-run single by senior Sheri Plante (Millbury, Mass.) put the team up 5-3. In the top of the sixth, Lasell sent nine batters to the plate and capitalized on four walks to take the 6-5 advantage. JWU threatened in the sixth and seventh innings, putting two runners on in each inning, but couldn't push a run across the plate as Lasell held on for the 6-5 victory. Silvia was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the win for the Lasers while Plante was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI in the loss for JWU.
In the nightcap, Lasell tallied four runs in the top of the fifth,
including a two run triple by sophomore Ashley
Laramie (Lynn, Mass.), en route to the 6-0 victory.
Sophomore Kirsten Mammola (North Reading, Mass.)
pitched the complete game for Lasell, allowing just three hits in
the shutout. Plante and senior Kirsten Griffiths (North Haven,
Conn.) each went 1-for-3 in the setback for the Wildcats. Laramie
was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI in the win for Lasell.
Johnson & Wales is now 1-12, 1-5 in the GNAC while Lasell
improves to 7-7 on the year, 2-0 in league play.
