MSOC: Lasell falls to unbeaten St. Joe’s of Maine

NEWTON, Mass. – The Lasell University men's soccer team gave unbeaten Saint Joseph's College a tough battle Saturday afternoon, but the regionally-ranked Monks pulled out a 3-0 victory over the Lasers in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest at Taylor Field.

The undefeated Monks, ranked ninth in New England, posted their sixth consecutive shutout and improved to 9-0-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the GNAC. One of just eight teams in NCAA DIII Men's Soccer to have not suffered a loss this season, St. Joe's owns an unbeaten streak of 63 games (57-0-6); the Monks' last loss, a 2-0 setback at the hands of University of New England, was on September 4th, 2016.

The Lasers (1-11 overall, 0-5 GNAC), kept the game scoreless until the final minute of the first half when sophomore Michael Wildes (Winslow, Maine) fired in a shot from 20 yards out to give the Monks a 1-0 lead at the half.

The Monks extended the lead in the 69th minute when senior Noah Robinson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) put one in the bottom right corner of the goal. Sophomore Jason Umbehr (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) finished off the scoring in the 86th minute with a header, assisted by Wildes and junior Henry Melville (Cumberland, Maine).

The visitors finished with a 33-6 advantage in shots, and a 9-0 margin in corner kicks. Lasell freshman keeper Nick Pappas (Peabody, Mass.) prevented further scoring, making several outstanding plays and finishing with 13 saves. St. Joe's keeper David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) needed to make just two saves to post his fifth clean sheet.

Lasell returns to action Tuesday, October 8, with a non-conference clash at Nichols College (3 p.m.), while St. Joe's returns home to host GNAC foe Rivier University on Wednesday, October 9, at 4 p.m.
