MSOC: Lasell falls to Colby-Sawyer in GNAC opener

NEWTON, Mass. – Sophomore Mason Galbato (North Easton, Mass.) scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 64th minute Saturday afternoon as Colby-Sawyer College edged Lasell University, 1-0, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer opener for both schools at Taylor Field.

The Chargers were awarded the PK after a player was taken down inside the box on a partial breakaway. Galbato stepped up and beat the Lasell keeper with a shot to the left side of the goal.

Colby-Sawyer picked up its first win of the season, improving to 1-2-2 overall and 1-0 in the GNAC. Lasell drops to 0-6-0 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The match was evenly played, with Colby-Sawyer having a 14-13 advantage in shots. The Chargers had an 11-5 margin in the first half and the Lasers had an 8-3 margin in the second half. Colby-Sawyer had seven corner kicks to three for Lasell.

Sophomore Lucas Boetsch (Rockport, Maine) earned the shutout in goal for CSC, making five saves. He got help from a solid defensive line of sophomores Couper Gunn (Easthampton, Mass.) and Cam Carey (Newton, N.H.) and freshman Ugochukwu Kachikwu (Delta State, Nigeria).

Senior Chris Tran (Nantucket, Mass.) was strong in the Laser goal, making eight saves.

Lasell is home again on Tuesday, September 17, hosting Curry College at Taylor Field in a non-conference match-up at 4 p.m. Colby-Sawyer returns home to host Clark University on Kelsey Field on Wednesday, September 18, at 4 p.m.
