Westfield State Blanks Men's Soccer 2-0

WESTFIELD, Mass. (10/2/17) – The Westfield State Owls used two goals in the first half to defeat the visiting Lasell College Lasers, 2-0, in non-conference action on Monday evening.

The Lasers drop to 2-9, while the Owls rise to 5-5 with their second straight win at Alumni Field.

Lasell's Matteo Cugno (Medford, Mass.) kept the score to a two-goal margin, as the sophomore keeper recorded a career-high seven saves in the effort.

The Owls used the first 30 minutes to put the game out of reach for Lasell, as Legen Mu'min flicked in the non-conference ice breaker in the 11th minute. Luis Nieves set up the play for the home team, lofting the ball into the middle from the left flank that found the top of Mu'min's head.

The Lasers tried to get on the board two minutes later, but Kenan Omerbasic's (Windsor, Conn.) bid was denied by Owls' keeper Alex Kraver.

Kieran Moriarty scored Westfield's goal of insurance with 15 minutes left to go in the first half, converting on a free kick outside the box.

The Lasers' best scoring chance came with about 17 minutes to play as Stephen Blood (Windsor, Conn.) took a pass in the middle of the penalty area, but Kraver stopped the near point blank shot to preserve the shutout. Kraver made four saves in his second straight shutout for Westfield.

Cugno kept the Owls at bay for the entirety of the second half, and stopped all five shots on target in the frame.

Westfield dominated the shots column, 22-8, including 15 shots alone in the second half.

The Lasers return to action on Wednesday, October 4 when they head to Rivier University for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
