Mount Ida Shuts Out Men's Soccer in Crosstown Rival Match

NEWTON, Mass. – The Mustangs of Mount Ida College blanked the Lasell men's soccer team 2-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni field.

Junior Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) had a goal and an assist, as Mustangs kept a clean sheet for the third time this year and improve to 5-3 and 2-1 in the GNAC, while the Lasers drop to 2-6 and 1-2 in conference play.

Brenes now has five goals on the year, one in each of Mount Ida's home games, and he put Mount Ida ahead in the 12th minute when he ran onto a through ball from Jared Barroso (Central Falls, R.I.) and then deked out Lasell goalie Matteo Cugno (Medford, Mass.) before sliding the ball into the open net.

Barroso had a pair of assists in the game, twice playing balls from midfield to Brenes. With just over five minutes to play, Brenes collected a lofted ball from Barroso, then centered the ball for sophomore Michael Porcello (Abington, Mass.), who beat Cugno for his first goal of the year.

Cugno made six saves for the Lasers, who were outshot by Mount Ida 22-7, though the visitors did have a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Senior Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) made two saves for the shutout in his final regular season game against Lasell.

Lasell heads to Framingham State on Monday for a 4:00 pm non-conference game, while Mount Ida continues a four-game GNAC homestand with a 7:00 PM game against Albertus Magnus on Wednesday.
