Second Half Surge Send Men's Soccer Past Rivier

NEWTON, Mass. (10/11/14) – The Lasell College men's soccer team used a second half scoring spree to push past Rivier University, 4-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference Action on Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field. The Lasers improved to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in conference matches while the Raiders slipped to 1-10 on the year and 1-4 in the conference.

Four different Lasers scored including Nick Rudovic (Yonkers, N.Y.), Jonathon Hislop (Arlington, Mass.), Nick Liquori (Westfield, Mass.) and Newton Jordao (Hyannis, Mass.) and Hislop and Jordao each tallied an assist in the match. Miguel Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) made a pair of saves in net to earn the victory in goal for Lasell.

Dan Connelly (Bedford, N.H.) provided the bulk of the offensive spark for Rivier with four shots, including a pair on frame and Gary Archambault (Auburn, N.H.) stopped six shots in goal for the Raiders.

The opening 45 minutes was a feeling out process for both sides, Lasell held a 7-4 advantage in shots but neither side was able to create a truly dangerous opportunity offensively. The second half would be a different story as Newton Jordao played a brilliant ball through to Nick Rudovic at the top of the six-yard box who slotted home in the 50th minute to give Lasell a 1-0 lead. Jonathon Hislop made it a 2-0 lead for Lasell a minute later as he pushed forward down the right flank and hit a top-notch ball into the top left corner of the net that left Archambault without a chance to save.

A Conor Fitzgerald (Marshfield, Mass.) cross in the 64th minute found an unmarked Nick Liquori on the top of the six who cooly finished to give Lasell a 3-0 lead. The Lasers scored their fourth goal in the 68th minute with another bit of pretty play when a service from Hislop was headed back across the goal by Servi Barrientos (Providence, R.I.) to Jordao who hammered home the ball for the final margin.

Lasell will return to action on Tuesday October 14th when they visit Emmanuel College for a 7:00 p.m. start. Rivier will host St. Joseph's College of Maine at 1:00 p.m.
