Men's Soccer Drops Regis 4-2

NEWTON, Mass. - The Lasell College men's soccer team defeated non-conference opponent Regis College, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon on Taylor Field. With the victory Lasell improved to 5-6 this season and Regis fell to 3-9 on the year.

The Lasers were paced by junior Nick Liquori (Westfield, Mass.) who netted a pair of goals on six shots this afternoon. Classmate Conor Fitzgerald (Marshfield, Mass.) and senior Eddie Roman (Revere, Mass.) each chipped in with a goal and recorded three and two shots, respectively. Freshman Newton Jordao (Hyannis, Mass.) tallied three assists and one shot in the victory.

Regis defenseman Brendan Plasczynski (Bristol, Conn.) netted his first career goal. Midfielder Trevor Hamilton (Winchester, Mass.) also tallied a goal for the Pride. Sophomore Dillion Lanctot (Somersworth, N.H.) paced the visitors with four shots and an assist, while junior Renato Rosas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) chipped in with three shots and Fernando Tomé (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) had two shots.

The Pride opened the match with a run of four consecutive shots to put pressure on junior goalkeeper Miguel Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) right from the start. Lasell answered this run when Jordao found Liquori on a thru pass at the top of the box. Liqouri broke past the Pride defenders and deposited his first goal of the game and second of the season at the 18:03 mark, giving the Lasers a 1-0 lead.

This duo hooked up again nine minutes later when Liquori received the ball from Jordao at 27:26. Liquori beat goalkeeper Manny Calderon (Bristol, Conn.) for his third tally of the campaign. Liquori shot the ball from the goal line behind the keeper to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage. Lasell would net their third goal of the match when Fitzgerald gathered the ball from the upper left corner of the box and passed through the Pride defense to Roman, who potted his first goal of the year into the bottom right corner of the net.

Regis would get on the scoreboard with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Hamilton gathered a loose ball outside of the box and fired the ball past Colmenares to cut the lead to 3-1 at the midway marker.

The Lasers had multiple opportunities to pull away from the Pride early in the second half, when Liquori and Jordao each fired shots on net that were blocked by the defenders. Regis pulled with a goal of the hosts when Lanctot crossed the ball from the end line to Plasczynski who netted his first career goal at the 73:52 marker, making the score 3-2 in favor of the hosts. Lasell netted the all important insurance goal at 83:46, when Jordao kicked the ball from midfield to find a wide open Fitzgerald who made the final score 4-2 on his eighth goal of the season.

Calderon made six saves in the effort, while Colmenares recorded two saves in the victory. Lasell held a 20-13 advantage in shots and held a 4-2 differential in corner kicks.

Lasell returns to action on Saturday when they host GNAC opponent Rivier University at 2:30 p.m. Regis  return to the pitch at 11 a.m. as they welcome Newbury College for a NECC matchup.
