Men's Soccer Battles Norwich to Scoreless Draw in 2OT

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's soccer team battled Lasell College for 110-scoreless minutes on Monday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.

Although neither side was able to score, the game wasn't short of great scoring chances for both sides to break the deadlock.

Lasell (9-3-1, 4-1-1 GNAC) outshot Norwich 18-13 with each team placing seven shots on frame in the match. Norwich junior goalkeeper Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.) made six saves for the Cadets (8-3-3, 3-1-2 GNAC) in his third straight start in goal to bring his record to 3-2-1 on the season and record his third shutout. Lasell sophomore keeper Miguel Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) turned aside seven shots to put his record at 9-3-1 on the year.

After each team registered just one shot on goal in the first half, both teams ramped up the pressure in the second half. Lasell had a great chance in the 52nd minute when Mike Skelton (Conway, N.H.) sent a slicing through ball down the left wing to a streaking Servi Barrientos Providence, R.I.). Barrientos settled the ball near the six-yard box and got a shot off that Hallstrom was able to make the save on though.

The Lasers had two more great opportunities in the 62nd minute with Hallstrom making a diving save on a free kick attempt by Sokol Bako (Roslindale, Mass.). Junior midfielder Derek Morin (South Paris, Maine) then made a team save for NU on the left post after a side volley shot from Patrick McCarthy (Weymouth, Mass.).

Norwich's best scoring chances came in the 73rd minute when senior forward Joe Young (McLean, Va.) and Christian Albrecht (Albuquerque, N.M.) were robbed on successive headers just 29 seconds apart by Colmenares.

With the draw, Norwich now has 11 points and sits tied with Johnson & Wales for third place in the GNAC standings. St. Joseph's (Maine) leads the GNAC with a perfect 6-0-0 record, while Lasell sits in second place with 13 points. Mount Ida dealt JWU its first loss of the season on Monday and now has 10 points in fifth place.

Norwich is now unbeaten in its last four games and continued their home unbeaten streak at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium with the draw, improving their record to 6-0-1.

Lasell will host Emmanuel College on Saturday October 19th at 2:30 p.m. for Family Friends and Alumni Weekend.
