Gordon Nips Lasell, 2-1 in Men's Soccer Action

NEWTON, Mass. (10/1/13) – The Lasell College men's soccer team suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Gordon College on Tuesday afternoon at Taylor Field. The victory allowed Gordon to remain undefeated and push their record to 10-0 while Lasell slipped to 7-2 on the season.

Mike Skelton (Conway, N.H.) scored his sixth goal of the season for Lasell, and Servi Barrientos (Providence, R.I.) tallied an assist in the loss. Andrew Vandervoort (Memphis, Tenn.) scored both goals for Gordon College, propelling the Fighting Scots to the victory with his 11th and 12th goals on the season.

Miguel Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) made six saves for Lasell while taking the loss and Tim Hardy (Gorham, Maine) picked up the win in net for Gordon College with four saves on the afternoon.

Skelton put the hosts in front in the 10th minute of action when a well-placed thru ball from Barrientos found the senior striker in space to put Lasell on top 1-0. Gordon equalized in the 19th minute when Vandervoort found himself on the end of an Evan Crocker cross that he slotted home.

The two teams battled each other throughout the latter part of the first half, but neither team found any promising opportunities as they headed into the half all even at 1-1. The Fighting Scots possessed an 8-6 lead in shots through the first 45 minutes, and had the only corner in the opening half.

Vandervoort broke the deadlock in the 69th minute when he chipped a closing Colmenares from 25 yards out to give Gordon a 2-1 lead. The Lasers would continue to chase the game over the final 20 minutes of action, but were unable to find a goal to draw level, falling 2-1.

Gordon College will travel to Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Nichols College on Friday October 4th for a 7:30 p.m. match against the Bison, while Lasell will make the short trip to Mount Ida College for a 1:00 p.m. fixture against the Mustangs in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action.
