Men's Soccer Grabs Sixth Win, 3-1 Over Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. – Lasell College scored three goals in an eight minute span, erasing an early one goal deficit and flying past host Clark University 3-1 in non-league men's soccer action on Wednesday evening at the Granger Soccer Complex. The win for the Lasers pushed their record to 6-1 overall, while the Cougars have now dropped four straight to slip to 2-5-1 on the season.

Things started out promising for the Scarlet and White in the ninth minute when Kyle Russo (Westford, Mass.) sent a low cross to the front of the goal mouth that Oscar Zapata (Lima, Peru) was able to direct home for an early 1-0 advantage.

Lasell, who trailed for just the second time this season, answered back relatively quickly when Mike Skelton (Conway, N.H.) slipped a pass to a streaking Jose Cabrera (Queretaro, Mexico) who registered his fourth goal of the season at 13:15.

Less than two minutes later Manny Alves (Pawtucket, R.I.) headed home a rebound off of a shot by Skelton that had clanged off the post, giving the Lasers a 2-1 lead.

Lasell was at it again moments later when a free kick by Servi Barrientos (Providence, R.I.) sailed through the box and found the foot of Ryan Montemurro (Meriden, Conn.) who was standing at the far post and tapped home his first marker of the season at 21:44.

Clark had a few chances to cut into the lead but they could not convert. The first came late in the first half when Kenneth Vera (Franklin Square, N.Y.) split a pair of defenders and found Vaske Gjino (Worcester, Mass.) open in the box but Gjino's shot sailed wide.

Then in the 65th minute, the Cougars had a pair of chances when Luke Scanlan (South Lancaster, Mass.) saw his header fly high and then Michael Spanos (Waterford, Conn.) hit the post with his shot seconds later.

Miguel Colmenates (Caracas, Venezuela) turned back a season-high eight shots en route to his sixth win of the year. Clark, meanwhile, used both Robert Bischof (Tarrytown, N.Y.) and Alistair Richardson (Tolland, Conn.). Richardson, who played 73 of the 90 minutes in relief of Bischof, made five saves including an excellent diving stop on Skelton in the 76th minute.

Lasell will return to GNAC action on Saturday when they host Suffolk University beginning at 1:00 p.m., while the Cougars will look to return to the win column when they visit Coast Guard on Saturday as well.
