Men's Soccer Drops Regis, 5-0 in Non-Conference Match

WESTON, Mass. – A pair of goals by both Mike Skelton (Conway, N.H.) and Jose Cabrera (Queretaro, Mexico), plus some insurance from Nick Liquori (Westfield, Mass.) proved to be too much for the Regis College men's soccer team, as visiting Lasell College claimed a 5-0 victory over the Pride on Saturday afternoon at Regis Stadium. The Lasers improve to 3-0 with the win, while Regis falls to 0-3 on the young season.

After a somewhat quiet opening, Skelton broke the scoreless deadlock at the 31:38 mark off a feed from senior classmate Sokol Bako (Roslindale, Mass.). Bako dished the ball to a streaking Skelton on the right side outside the 18, who collected the pass, took a few touches, and took a low shot that tucked inside the left side netting for the early lead.

Skelton struck again less than three minutes later when a Regis foul in the box set him up for a penalty kick shot. Skelton was able to strike the ball past goalkeeper Stefan Todorovic (Los Angeles, Calif.) for the 2-0 advantage, which stuck through halftime.

Just over six minutes into the second stanza, Cabrera added to the Lasers lead. The junior forward received the ball in the box, beat a Regis defender, and ripped a shot into the upper left corner. In similar back-to-back fashion as Skelton, Cabrera made it 4-0 after tapping in Lance Mayo's (Cambridge, Mass.) shot at the back right post in the 69th minute.

The Pride's best opportunity of the game would come five minutes later, as Regis was awarded a penalty kick of their own after a Laser defender took down a Pride player in the box. Unfortunately for the Crimson & Gold, Christian Mukala's (Malden, Mass.) shot attempt went just wide of the left post.

Liquori would finish the scoring for the day in the 88th minute, as the sophomore headed the ball home off a corner kick from freshman Jon Sutton (Orange, Conn.).

Mukala, Kenny Charron (West Warwick, R.I.), Nick Tavares (Bellingham, Mass.), and Renato Rosas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) combined for the Pride's four shots on goal during the game, all of which Miguel Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) stopped to preserve the shutout for Lasell.

Todorovic and freshman Manny Calderon (Bristol, Conn.) combined for six saves on the day for Regis, who will be back in action at Albertus Magnus on Monday, Sept. 9 at 4:00 p.m. Lasell will host Anna Maria at 12:00 p.m. next Saturday, Sept. 14.
