Men's Soccer Uses 2-1 Defeat of Bridgewater to Make it Eight Straight

Bridgewater, Mass. (10/10/12) - The Lasell College men's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over host Bridgewater State University in non-conference action on Wednesday night at Swenson Field. The Lasers who were ranked 10th in New England in the lastest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll have now won eight consecutive matches to improve to 12-1 on the season, the best start in the program's history.  Bridgewater falls to 4-7-1 overall.

Lasell took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game on a goal by junior midfielder Jared Lewis (Haverhill, Mass.).  Senior forward Kyle Cronin (Weymouth, Mass.) made a long run down the middle of the field to set up the goal.  Cronin slipped a pass to an open Lewis on the right, and Lewis fired the ball into the left side of the goal from just inside the 18.

Senior forward Brennen Adams (Southbury, Conn.) gave the Lasers a 2-0 advantage with his third goal of the season in the 73rd minute off a feed from junior midfielder Nery Guerra (Guatemala City, Guatemala).  Adams ripped a shot from 12 yards over the outstretched hand of Bridgewater junior goaltender Matt Bagley (Braintree, Mass.) and just under the cross bar.

Bagley would make a diving save to rob Lewis of a goal in the 75th minute to keep it a 2-0 game.

The Bears had a terrific scoring opportunity in the 63rd minute, but sophomore defender Josh Goehring (Haverhill, Mass.) hit the corner of the post and the cross bar. Less than a minute later, Lasell freshman keeper Miguel Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) made a solid save on a point blank range shot of the foot of BSU senior forward Adam Smith (Kingston, Mass.) from only five yards out.

Bridgewater senior forward Braima Samati (Boston, Mass.) also rang the post in the 83rd minute.

The Bears would finally dent the scoreboard in the 84th minute as Smith scored off a rebound off a Samati shot to cut the deficit to 2-1.  Colmenares made the initial stop off Samati who was all alone in front of the net.  The rebound, however, fell to the foot of Smith who ripped a shot past a defender and into the unguarded net.

With the clock ticking down under a minute to play, the Bears had one last opportunity to notch the equalizer, but Colmenares was up to the task.  Off a corner kick, freshman Ryan Madden (Milton, Mass.) drilled a low shot from 20 yards out that was labeled for the lower-right corner, but Colmenares was able to smother the attempt to preserve the win for the Lasers.

Bridgewater held an 18-14 shot advantage for the game with 14 of the Bears' shots coming in the second half.  Both teams were playing a man down for the final 60 minutes due to matching red cards.

Colmenares turned aside seven shots to post his tenth win of the season.  Bagley made six saves in the loss for the Bears.

In upcoming action, Bridgewater hosts Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic (MASCAC) rival Mass. Maritime Academy on Saturday at 5:00 PM.  Lasell entertains Albertus Magnus College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at 2:30, and will honor their eight player senior class prior to the match.
