Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - Sophomore Matt Kelsey (Cambridge, Mass.) scored two goals to lead the Skidmore College men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Lasell College Friday night in the first game of the 2008 Skidmore Alumni Men's Soccer Tournament.
The win propels the Thoroughbreds to a 2-1 record, while the Lasers
fall to 0-1.
Sophomore Phil Cassidy (Altamont, N.Y.) lifted a pass from the
right side and found Kelsey wide open in front of the net for a
header to give Skidmore the lead at 22:37.
Lasell answered back 17 seconds later when a Skidmore foul in the
box allowed Laser senior Zach Gagne (Somerset,
Mass.) to score off of a penalty kick to tie the game 1-1.
Kelsey struck for his second goal when he drilled a ball in front
off an assist Pat Phelan (Wallingford, Ct.) past Lasell keeper
Julian Dutton (Madison, Ct.) to give the
Thoroughbreds a 2-1 lead at 74:32.
Phelan scored a goal of his own when Mark Roseboom (Worcester,
Mass.) lifted a perfect free kick from the goal line into the box
to allow Phelan to head it in with 4:29 left to play, giving
Skidmore a 3-1 final lead.
Dutton kept the Lasers in the game, collecting 12 saves. Skidmore
freshman keeper Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Ct.) finished with
six saves. The Thoroughbreds out shot the Lasell 27-13.
Skidmore will be in action on Sunday when against Western
Connecticut State at 2 p.m. Lasell will play Western Connecticut
Saturday at 3 p.m. in the tournament's other game.
