WVB: Lasell downs UMass Dartmouth in four sets in home opener

NEWTON, Mass. – Freshman Sabine Milton (San Mateo, Calif.) recorded a team-high 15 kills and six service aces Thursday evening as Lasell University defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 3-1, in the home opener at the Lasell Athletic Center.

The visiting Corsairs took the first set, 25-21, but Lasell came back to sweep the next three, 25-21, 25-22, and 25-10 to close out the match. The Lasers won their third straight match to improve to 5-3 overall, while UMD fell to 3-6.

Milton hit at a .435 attack percentage, helping Lasell hit at a .387 clip as a team.  Freshman Mckenna McCool (Loomis, Calif.) added nine kills (.375 pct.), classmate Tori Scambray (Brea, Calif.) chipped in with seven winners, and first-years Juliana Medini (Roxbury, N.J.) and Madalyn Scully (Mauston, Wis.) each had six kills and at least a .500 attack percentage. Medini also added a team-high six blocks, and senior Jess Langan (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) had 24 set assists.

Freshman Kate Wade (San Clemente, Calif.) led the visitors with 10 kills while sophomore Devon Laing (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) was good for six winners and sophomore Marley Alexander (Ashburn, Va.) had five kills and a .400 attack percentage. Freshman Zoe Dizenzo (Orange, Conn.) made 27 set assists.

The Lasers will be home again on Saturday for a tri-match against Elms College and Fisher College, beginning with the Elms match as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) season opener at 11:00 a.m. The Corsairs will look to get back on track Saturday in a tri-match at Wheaton College with Coast Guard, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
