SB: Lasers Season Ends in Tough Battle with Simmons

Newton, MA – The Lasell University softball team lost to the Simmons Sharks in the GNAC tournament on Sunday morning, 5-4. The loss ends the Lasers 2024 season as they finish with a 25-18 overall record and 14-4 conference record.

The Sharks got out ahead early as a walk and a sacrifice bunt to start the game gave the Sharks a runner on second with one out. Teagan Buckley singled up the middle to score the game's first run, giving the Sharks an early 1-0 lead.

Simmons would tack on some insurance runs later on in the fourth as Trinity Payne singled with the bases loaded to bring in two runs. A couple batters later, Raya Anderson sent a single down the third base line to bring in another run and a bases loaded walk would score the Sharks fourth run of the inning.

The Lasers battled back in the bottom half of the fourth as Mackenzie Still singled to lead off the inning and Shyanne Raccio doubled her in. A single from Katie Hopkins moved runners to the corners for Eryn Sheeley as a sacrifice fly from her scored another run. An error gave the Lasers runners on first and second for Abby Fortin. Fortin would single up the middle to bring them within two.

In the fifth a Still double started the inning and a wild pitch would mover her to third base for Hopkins. Hopkins singled up the middle to bring the Lasers within one.

In the bottom of the seventh, Still and Raccio both singled giving Lasell runners on first and second. A walk drawn by Sheeley loaded the bases with two outs, but the Lasers couldn't get the big hit as a fly out would end the game and their season.

Offensively for Lasell, Still was three for four with a double. Raccio singled and doubled and drove in a run, Hopkins singled twice and drove in a run. Fortin also added a singled and RBI.
