SB: Quiet Bats Lead to Doubleheader Loss for Lasers

Worcester, MA – The Lasell University softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to the Worcester State Lancers on Wednesday evening, 4-0 and 4-1. The losses drop the Lasers to 20-15 on the year while the Lancers move to 19-12.

Game 1

Both games of this doubleheader set would be low scoring as both offenses were quiet all day. It would be Worcester State that got out in front in game one as they had runners on second and third with one out and a passed ball would score one run. A ground out to shortstop from the next batter would bring in the next base runner giving the Lancers a 2-0 lead.

Both sides would be held scoreless over the next four innings as the Lancers Emily Bartlett and the Lasers Eryn Sheeley were both dealing. In the fifth inning, a single from Lasell's Abby Fortin and a walk from Alyssa Bland gave them runners on first and second, but Bartlett got out of the jam forcing a fly out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, a leadoff walk and two passed balls gave the Lancers a runner on third with one out. The next batter, Morgan Keefe sent a single to right field making it a 3-0 game. A bunt single put runners on first and third and Bailey Tammaro would reach first on an error, scoring another lancer run.

Fortin would single yet again in the seventh, but that's all the Lasers could get as they would go on to lose 4-0.

Sheeley (9-5) started for the Lasers, tossing six innings allowing four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two.

Offensively for the Lasers, Fortin singled twice, Katie Hopkins and Brianna Gendreau each singled as well.

Game 2

The Lancers got out in front in game two, scoring in the first inning again as a ground ball with the bases loaded scored the game's first run. In the fifth inning a walk, error and bunt single would load the bases for the Lancers again. Bartlett stepped to the plate and punched a single through the right side of the infield. The ball would get by the right fielder and Bartlett would make it all the way to third, scoring all three runners and giving the Lancers a 4-0 advantage.

The Lasers would have their last chance at a comeback in the seventh when Sheeley led the inning off with a single up the middle. After two quick outs, Bland tripled over the right fielder's head, scoring Sheeley for the Lasers first run of the day. A groundout would end the game and the Lancers would win 4-1.

Fortin (9-5) started for Lasell in game two, throwing six innings allowing four runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one.

Offensively for Lasell, Bland tripled, singled and drove in the Lasers lone run. Gendreau, Hopkins, Sheeley, and Ally Kirck all singled as well.
