SB: Lasers Split vs Rivier

Newton, MA - The Lasell Lasers split their Wednesday doubleheader with Rivier, winning game one 6-5, and falling in game two 3-2. The Lasers are now 12-8, while the Raiders are 5-13.

Game One

The Raiders got out to a hot start, scoring twice in the first on a single. After the Lasers cut the lead in half on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning, the Raiders extended their lead with two more in the second. The Lasers would get one back in the third on a Mackenzie Still RBI single. After the Raiders went up 5-2 in the fourth, Lasell took the lead with a big bottom inning. Both Brianna Gendreau and Eryn Sheeley each had RBI singles. Still then walked with the bases loaded before Katie Hopkins had a sacrifice fly to put the Lasers up 6-5. That would be the final score, as neither team scored over the final three innings.

The Lasers sent Meghan Theall to the circle to start the game, and she went three inning sin her first outing of the season. She allowed six hits and four earned runs. She was relieved by Eryn Sheeley, who was unhittable over four innings, allowing no hits and an unearned run, while striking out seven. She picked up her eighth win of the season. Seven different Lasers recorded a hit, led by Brianna Gendreau with three and Emily Mestas with two. They each had a double.

Game Two

After winning game one, Lasell got off to the right start in the second game, scoring twice in the first inning, as Brianna Gendreau and Mackenzie Still both had RBI singles. The Lasers would hold the lead up until the fifth when the Raiders tied it up on a single. They then took the lead in the sixth, going up 3-2. Lasell would have a chance in the seventh, as they led off the seventh with an infield single. But the ensuing batter attempted a sacrifice bunt, and was thrown out at first, but the runner attempted to advance to third and was thrown out. The Lasers were unable to get anything going with two outs, and fell 3-2.

Abigail Fortin went the distance for the Lasers, allowing eight hits and three runs, two of which were earned over seven innings. She struck out a career high six batters. Fortin also had two hits at the plate, including the only extra base hit for the Lasers, a double in the first. Katie Hopkins also had two hits for Lasell.

Up next - The Lasers will be right back at it on Thursday, as they travel Dean for a doubleheader at 3pm.
