SB: Lasers Open Season By Splitting Doubleheader

Auburndale, FL - The Lasell Lasers Softball team opened their season with a doubleheader on Sunday. They lost their first game against St. Norbert by a score of 9-2. They then bounced back against Beloit, winning 8-6. The Lasers are now 1-1 on the season.

Game One vs St. Norbert

The Green Knights opened the scoring by plating two runs in the top of the first. After going down 1-2-3 in the first, the Lasers responded with a run in the second on a Katie Hopkins RBI single, cutting the deficit in half. But the Green Knights responded by adding three runs in the third. But the Lasers fought back, and scored another run in the fourth, this time on an Ally Kirck bunt. St. Norbert would score four more runs in the sixth, giving us the final score of 9-2.

Playing in her first career game, Grace Stephenson led the Lasers with three hits. She also scored both runs for the Lasers. Emily Mestas was the only other Laser with multiple hits, collecting two singles.

Starting on the mound for the Lasers was Abigail Fortin. She went three innings, allowing seven hits, and five earned run. She walked three, while striking out five. She was relieved by Eryn Sheeley, who went four innings. Sheeley allowed six hits and four runs, three of which were earned. She struck out seven while walking four.

Game Two vs Beloit

Playing as the road team in this game, the Lasers got out to the early lead when Grace Stephenson doubled to right field, scoring Mackenzie Still. After the Buccaneers tied things up in the bottom half of the inning, the Lasers quickly retook the lead in the second on an Alyssa DeMarest single, one of her three hits in the game. The Lasers then expanded their lead even further in the third, scoring four runs. The first and second runs on an error, the second on a ground out, and the third on a wild pitch. The Lasers would tack on another run in the sixth on a Mackenzie Still single, giving Lasell a 7-1 lead. The Lasers continued to extend their lead in the seventh, adding another run on an error. Beloit made things interesting by scoring five runs in the seventh, and even had the winning run on base, but the Lasers were able to get through it, and finish off the victory.

Four Lasers had multiple hits in this game, including three from Stephenson and Still each. Emily Mestas and Brianna Gendreau each had two hits. Lasell used the same two pitchers from game one, but it was Eryn Sheeley who started. She went 6.1 innings, and allowed six hits and one unearned run. She struck out nine and walked just three. Abigail Fortin then came in and finished off the game.
