Men's Volleyball: Lasers grab first two wins of the season at the SUNY Poly Invitational

MARCY, N.Y. The Lasell University men's volleyball team grabbed its first two wins of the season, winning, 3-0, against Wells and 3-1 against Elmira Saturday at the SUNY Poly Invitational.

FIRST MATCH (Lasell 3, Wells 0):

Lasell took the first set, 25-20, over the Express and had the edge in kills with 16 compared to seven for Wells. The Lasers were successful with their kills 48.0% of the time in the first set.

The Lasers kept racking up the kills in the second set with 16 again. They were able to take advantage of six errors by the Express and take the set, 25-22.

The Express struggled in the third set and the Lasers took advantage taking the set, 25-8. Lasell played a clean third set having zero errors compared to nine for the Express.

Junior Tucker Merritt led the match with 13 kills in 16 chances. Freshman Jordan Shinaut had 10 kills.

Freshman Riley Mahoney led the Express with nine kills and junior Connor Garvey had eight kills.

SECOND MATCH (Lasell 3, Elmira 1):

The first set between the Lasers and the Soaring Eagles went into extra points with the Lasers edging out the win, 27-25. Lasell trailed in kills during the set, but had five less errors and had the advantage in kill percentage as well.

The Lasers took control of the second set, winning it 25-16. The Lasers continued to hold the advantage in kill percentage and in errors, but also held the advantage in kills as well in the second set.

The Eagles came back in the third set minimizing their errors to take it 25-22. Both sides had three errors apiece and 10 kills in the set.

The Lasers took control and finished out the match in the fourth set, taking it 25-14. The Lasers continued to take advantage of the Eagles' errors. Lasell was able to stay consistent and keep the errors low to take the match.

Freshman Theo Zaharewicz and Shinaut were the leaders in kills for the Lasers with nine each. Junior Jesus Garcia had 37 assists and six solo blocks. Junior Jan Baranowski had six solo blocks as well.

Junior Oscar Munoz Trinidad led the match with 14 kills for Elmira.

The Lasers will be back in action when they travel to Springfield, Massachusetts, to take on American International and Sacred Heart at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively, on Friday, Jan. 28.
