Men's Lacrosse: Defense shines as Lasers stay undefeated in the GNAC

New Haven, Conn. – Senior Bash Cunningham (Norwalk, Conn.) scored four goals to lead the Lasell University Lasers men's lacrosse team to a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Albertus Magnus College, 20-2, Wednesday evening at Celentano Field.

Lasell struck first as senior Jordan Hines (Essex Junction, Vt.) scored on a solo effort. He was followed up eight seconds later as senior Steven Phelps (Stamford, Conn.) to take a two to zero lead. Cunningham followed up the Phelps goal by putting home his first of the evening. Freshman Ryan Stone (Granby, Conn.) made it four different scorers in the first quarter as he scored off an assist from junior Ethan Dallas (Longmeadow, Mass.). Cunningham netted his second of the night following the feed from senior David Burke (Cohasset, Mass.). Junior Nate Whitehead (Chicopee, Mass.) scored followed by Burke to take a seven-goal lead. Up a man, junior Landon Reyes (Westfield, Mass.) made is seven different scorers on eight goals in the first quarter as he put it past the keeper off the Hines feed.

Burke opened the scoring in the second quarter for the Lasers and he was quickly followed up by the third goal from Cunningham off the assist from sophomore Casey Hart (Colchester, Mass.). Reyes added his second two minutes later and senior James Anderson (Medway, Mass.) scored right before halftime to give Lasell a 12-0 lead going into half.

Two minutes after the third quarter began, Anderson scored his second consecutive goal on an assist from Stone. Junior Nate Taggart (Scarborough, Maine) put his first in the net with the man up advantage. Whitehead added his second of the game as he took the feed from Anderson and put it past the goalie. Graduate student Brendan Johnson (Plymouth, Mass.) scored his first of the evening on an assist by Stone and a second straight Stone assist facilitated the fourth Cunningham goal. Taggart added his second as the Lasers added their final goal of the third quarter to take a 18-0 lead into the fourth.

After assisting on three goals in the third quarter Stone opened the fourth quarter with a goal of his own to give Lasell 19 unanswered goals. Less than a minute later the Falcons got on the board as sophomore Shane Kelly (Madison, Conn.) put it home off the assist from junior Charles Stewart (Stratford, Conn.). Senior Jayme Toro (East Haven, Conn.) made it two straight for Albertus as he netted a solo effort. Stone scored his hat trick in the with just over five minutes left in the game and that capped the scoring as the Lasers took the game 20-2.

Senior Alex Beauchemin (Westfield, Mass.) got the win allowing one goal through 51 minutes of action. Cunningham led the way with four goals and Stone scored three goals and added three assists. Whitehead, Burke, Reyes, Taggart, and Anderson all scored two goals with Anderson and Burke assisting on a goal as well. Phelps scored a goal and grabbed seven ground balls and Johnson scored a goal. Hines had a goal and an assist and junior Kyle Charlot (Harwich, Mass.) grabbed six ground balls.

The Lasers will be back in action on Saturday, April 2, when they play host to Emmanuel College in a GNAC match. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Grellier Field.
