Men's Lacrosse: Defense stifles Warriors; Anderson scores five in Lasers' first win

Newton, Mass. – Senior James Anderson scored five goals and assisted on another goal to lead the Lasell University Lasers men's lacrosse team to their first victory of the season over the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors, 11-3, Wednesday afternoon at Grellier Field.

The win marked the first of the season for the Lasers and the first in the head coaching career of Dieter Treusdell.

The first quarter was all Lasell holding the Warriors to zero goals while pulling out to a five-goal lead. The scoring got started on a goal by junior Nate Taggart followed up by two straight goals from Anderson. Senior Bash Cunningham and senior David Burke scored the final two goals of the first half.

The Lasers added to their lead in the second getting the first goal of the quarter when freshman Ryan Stone found the back of the net. The Warriors clawed one back getting their first goal of the game from freshman Dan Barron (Newington, Conn.). Lasell added the final two goals of the quarter with Stone scoring his second and junior Magnus Leonard took the ball coast to coast and bounced it past the goalie for his first of the season.

The third quarter was a defensive battle between the two sides as both sides failed to beat the keepers.

The Warriors struck first in the fourth quarter as Barron took advantage of a Lasell penalty and scored a man up goal. Anderson took over from there scoring three straight goals with his final one coming with the man advantage. Eastern Connecticut State found the back of the net one more time as freshman Brycen Kennedy (Southington, Conn.) scored a goal with 43 seconds left in the game. The defense for the Lasers took over the game only allowing three goals as they took the game 11-3.

"Today was a great team win" said Treusdell. "Our guys have been working hard and staying together. They earned it."

Barron contributed on all three of the Warriors goals scoring two and assisting on another. Kennedy contributed with a goal and freshman Quinn O' Connor (Glastonbury, Conn.) had an assist.

Anderson led the game in goals scoring five on twelve shots while assisting on a goal. Stone scored two goals and Cunninghame, Burke, Taggart and Leonard all found the back of the net. Taggart added two assists along with sophomore Anthony DeRosa who had two assists as well. Along with his goal Burke also assisted on a goal as well. Junior Zach Mills led the game with five ground balls. Senior Steven Phelps was good on faceoffs winning 11 of the 15 he participated in.

Senior Alex Beauchemin picked up his first win in net this season saving 10 of 13 shots he faced and allowing only three.

The Lasers will be back in action on Saturday, March 19, when they open Great Northeast Athletic Conference play with a road trip to the University of Saint Joseph Connecticut. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
