Men's Lacrosse: DeRosa nets hat trick in 12-11 loss to Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.)

NEWTON, Mass. - Sophomore midfielder Anthony DeRosa of the Lasell University men's lacrosse team recorded his first collegiate hat trick and added an assist during a 12-11 non-conference setback to Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) Saturday at Grellier Field.

Freshman attack Ryan Stone continues to play well for the Lasers (0-3), as he tallied two goals and two assists, including his first collegiate assist during the third quarter. Bash Cunningham (2 goals, assist), David Burke (goal, assist), Nate Taggart (goal, assist) and Jordan Hines (2 goals) all made significant contributions for Lasell.

Sophomore Casey Hart tallied his first career assist for the Lasers in the opening quarter. Eight Lasers tallied at least one point.

Colby Martin led the way for the Knights (2-0) with a game-leading four goals, to go along with one assist. Sean Mueller (goal, 2 assists) Ryan Olmstead (goal, assist), Brian Esposito (2 assists) and Nick Gurello (2 goals) also played well for the visitors.

The Lasers did not allow the Knights to score for the opening 8:54 of the first quarter. Taggart and DeRosa scored unassisted goals at the 13:06 and 7:31 mark, respectively, giving the hosts a 2-0 advantage. A goal by Stone gave the Lasers a 4-1 lead with 4:25 remaining in the opening period.

The Knights evened the game with three straight goals, but Lasell ended the half strong, scoring four of the final five goals. Cunningham found the back of the net, assisted by Burke, with three seconds on the clock, sending the Lasers into halftime with an 8-5 cushion.

Each team scored two goals in the third quarter, as Lasell led, 10-7, going into the final 15 minutes. The Knights played a strong fourth quarter, holding a 5-1 advantage on the scoreboard. Maxwell Green Wright registered the game-winning goal with 37 seconds left.

The Knights held a 36-32 advantage in shots. Cunningham led all players with eight shots and Burke added six, as the two student-athletes put a combined six shots on target. Senior defender Tyler Rose posted team-bests of six ground balls and three caused turnovers. 

Lasell led the ground-balls category, 32-31, and went 1 for 1 on man-up situations. Lasell was successful on 16-of-19 clears, while Mount Saint Mary went 13 for 17.

The Lasers will compete at UMass Boston Tuesday at 4 p.m.
