Men's Lacrosse: Lasers suffer 18-4 setback to MIT

NEWTON, Mass. - Junior attack Landon Reyes of the Lasell University men's lacrosse team compiled one goal and one assist Wednesday, as the Lasers lost, 18-4, in their home opener against MIT at Grellier Field.

Freshmen attacks Ryan Stone and Adam Haytayan scored their first collegiate goals for the Lasers (0-1). Senior midfielder Jordan Hines also found the back of the net, while junior midfielder Nate Taggart tallied his first collegiate assist. Senior goalie Alex Beauchemin compiled a game-high 16 saves for Lasell.

Gavin Vandenberg (6 goals, 1 assist) and Ryan Gebhardt (3 goals, 4 assists) led the way for the Engineers (1-0). Dylan Nelson scored a hat trick for the visitors and goalie Lukas Drexler-Bruce earned the win, stopping 11 of 13 shots in 45 minutes of action.

Vandenberg scored 5:52 into the first for the visitors, and then Hines knotted the game at 1-1 with 4:45 on the scoreboard in the quarter. MIT established complete control of the game with 12 unanswered goals, taking a 13-1 advantage with 9:53 remaining in the third on a goal by Gebhardt.

Junior Patrick Russo went 6 of 10 on faceoffs for Lasell. The Lasers went 17 of 22 on clears, while MIT finished 18 for 19. The Engineers won 14 of 24 faceoffs and held a 37-21 lead in ground balls. MIT took 56 shots and Lasell attempted 25.

The Lasers will travel to UMass Boston for a 1 p.m. non-conference game Saturday.
