Men's Basketball Falls to No. 23 Ranked Babson 87-65

BABSON PARK, Mass.— The Lasell College men's basketball team fell to No. 23 ranked Babson College 87-65 in non-conference men's basketball action on Tuesday night at Staake Gymnasium. Lasell suffers their first loss at 0-1, while Babson jumps to 2-1.

 

Junior Pat Marchand (Cranston, R.I.) had 16 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Yordan Villalon (Miami, Fla.) contributed six points and a team-high nine boards for the Lasers. Senior Angel Ortiz (East Lyme, Conn.) and junior Pedro Pabon (Queens, N.Y.) each scored seven points.

Senior John Wickey (Manchester, N.H.) added 16 points and a game-high five assists, classmate Eric Dean (Gilford, N.H.) contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and fellow senior David Mack (Holden, Mass.) added a season-high 11 points to go along with three boards and two steals for the Beavers. Sophomore Sam Bohmiller (Franklin, Mass.) also chipped in with eight points and a career-high five rebounds on the night.

Flannery scored the first 10 points of the game for the Green and White, which used a 16-5 run to build a 27-14 lead with 9:40 left in the first half. Leading by just two at 11-9, the Beavers knocked down four straight free throws and then got five straight points from Wickey to push their lead to 11. Five quick points by Marchand pulled the Lasers back within 20-14 before the hosts ripped off seven straight points, capped by a Dean three-pointer to take a 13-point lead.

Despite going without a field goal over the final seven minutes of the opening stanza, Babson went 16-for-22 at the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes and led 40-24 at the break.

Lasell, which trailed by as many as 20 early in the second half, cut its deficit to 55-39 on a three-pointer by Ortiz with 11:28 to go in the game before the Beavers exploded for a quick 12-3 spurt to put the game out of reach. Flannery followed a Wickey layup with a trifecta, and Mack and Wickey each knocked down a pair of free throws on back-to-back possessions to make it 64-42.  A Wickey steal and three-point play on the following possession gave the Green and White its biggest lead of the game at 67-42 with 8:58 left to play.

Babson shot 52.8 percent (28-for-53) from the floor and outscored the Lasers 44-24 in the paint. The Beavers also scored 18 points off 16 Lasell turnovers and held a 41-28 edge on the glass.
 
The Lasers shot 36.4 percent (24-for-66) on the night and scored 14 second-chance points off of 13 offensive rebounds.
Babson returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Skidmore for a 2 p.m. tipoff, while Lasell will host Rhode Island College in its home opener on Thrusday night at 7 p.m.
