Hot Shooting Sinks Men's Basketball at Norwich

Northfield, Vt. (01/17/2013) - The Lasell College men's basketball fell victim to a scorching performance from the three point line by Norwich University, losing a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game, 82-70 on Thursday evening. Norwich shot a torrid 10-16 from three point territory to improve to 5-10 on the season and 2-6 in the league, while Lasell slid to 2-13 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

Angel Ortiz (East Lyme, Conn.) led the Lasers with a career-high 20 points, while Don Stephens (West Palm Beach, Fla.) finished with 13 points and Chris Canino (Hartford, Conn.) chipped in with nine points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Nicholas Havoutis (Coral Springs, Fla.) paced the Cadets with 18 points, while Evan Tullar (Chelsea, Vt.) and Tom McDonald (Groton, Mass.) each finished with 15 points.

The Cadets broke open a close game late in the first half, using a 15-3 run to take a 38-26 lead with just over a minute to play in the opening half. Freshmen Richard O'Brien (Manchester, N.H.) stopped the Cadets run by drilling a trifecta to cut the lead to nine points. A free throw by each team over the final 45 seconds sent the Lasers into the intermission trailing 39-30.

Norwich pushed their lead to 50-36 over the first five minutes of the second half, before began mounting a comeback. Lasell went on a 16-4 run to trim the cut the lead to 54-52 with 10:18 to play in the game.

The Cadets responded with a 7-0 run to bring their lead back to nine. Lasell cut the lead to five points on multiple occasions over the games final seven minutes, but were unable to get all the way back.

Norwich will visit Rivier on Saturday January 19th for a GNAC contest, while the Lasers will be back home on Saturday to square off with the neighboring Mustangs of Mount Ida College at 4:00 p.m.
